what cause the gas needle to "float"?

Better description on float?... But my best guess at what you mean. Our gauges are sensitive or respond quick in comparison to other vehicles so when the gas moves away from the center it will drop then raise and so on and so forth... My legacy has two floats one on each side and the needle responds slower so you don't see the level change when cornering, accelerating and so on.

i didnt remember my first doing it. but the one i have now floats down a little when cornering or stopping then goes back up. just didnt know if it was a problem that needed to be addressed

no, pretty typical for the newer cluster style, not sure about the older clusters if they responded the same or not

Mine used to be better, but with my newer tank, its much MUCH worse. Doesn't bother me though.

Typical on all early to mid 90's GM cars. Don't sweat it. My SCX and my GTZ as well as my '87 GT all do it. It's gay but it's life....

Original tanks have walls around where the pump is submerged to stop the sloshing... i noticed when I changed my tank in my red car those walls are not there in the aftermarket versions, making the gas slosh around MUCH more. This is why I'm trying to keep the stock tank intact on the pink car, with my pump modified it doesn't touch the complete bottom of the tank so I need to minimize any sloshing to keep the fuel there all the time.

Oh, it has walls, but they are not the same as the original. The new tank had some sort of metal baffle in there, whereas my original tank had a plastic one.
