I have a friends 97 caravan here to put a new water pump on it, anyone know what im getting into with this?
The 3.3 looks so simple like 1 hour and done, this pump i have has a smooth pulley on it i think the timing belts runs off on the 3.0 L

way off topic, i dont know a dam thing about dodge. im sure someone here might be able to chime in and let me know what im up against.

Far as i got it was parked in the driveway up on the ramps and came in the house for the day and looked at it out the window from time to time.

Never worked on a 3.0, so no idea. I have owned a 3.3 both in 93 and the newer 03 that I have now. That is a Gen 3 van, never worked on one, so no idea.

Have you tried posting at one of the caravan forums?

Nope, i looked on youtube. the 3.3 one is so simple the pulley bolts on, the pump i have just has a smooth small pulley that looks like i cant attach nothing to it, no way to install a pulley to it, i did some quick searching and didnt find out much about it. possibly it runs off the timing belt some how.

The garage quoted him at $500 to change it, maybe thats with timing belt too, probably a good idea to change that if it has to be pulled apart that far.

I might go crawl under it and have a look today, im not too excited in doing it so no rush lol.

well i pulled the plastic cover off underneath in search of the pump... i cant even find the water pump. tryed following the lower line, to crosses into a steel line around the cross over exhaust pipe but i cant feel or see where the heck it goes, it must hug tight to the engine across the back and the pump must be inside the timing cover plate or something and thats behind everything on the front of the engine.

I think its not going to be a 1 hour job. this is why i will only own chevy LOL

Well......

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain the cooling system.
Remove the drive belts. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt.
Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
Separate the water pump from the water inlet pipe and remove the water pump.
Inspect the water pump and replace as necessary.

On the 3 liter the water pump is driven off the timing belt. looks like fun. i supposed i should have the guy pick up a timing belt and change that at the same time. now i just have to figure out how that goes on LOL. if im careful and the engine doesnt move when i take it off should be pretty simple

Well those steps are useless LOL..

you have to remove pretty much everything to get to it.

belts
Wiring
rad hose
ac compressor belt tensioner
Ac compressor / ac bracket
power steering pump
motor mount
bracket on the engine the motor mount attaches to
timing belt covers

Im on hold until tuesday when i can get a new timing belt to put on since its this far apart.
Ill be sure to mark everything where it is now and not turn anything, hopefully it still runs once im done.

What a stupid place for the pump..

No, its a mits.. Made for Dodge.

I would highly recommend replacing the idler/tensioner on that belt (lower left smooth pulley) while you are in there. Should come as an assembly.
