service engine light on and off

my car has been acting funny on and off the past week with a rough idle, and sluggish when the gas is pressed. its a 1991 3.1L. I used a paper clip and it gave me code 44-Oxygen sensor or circuit - lean exhaust and 45-Oxygen sensor or circuit - rich exhaust. Is this probably the o2 sensor or any tips on what to start trouble shooting and how? Thanks for any help!

My 3.1 Liter has a similar issue, yet I replaced the O2 Sensor. My Car idles up and I tap the gas and it will idle down. Is that happening with you?

no mines more a kinda chuging idle at stop lights like its going to die, then on take off sometimes seems to sputter. almost like it doesnt wanna go then just takes off.

Replace the o2 sensor as the ECU is telling you to do... Its bad and the fueling is off and its in a limp mode so it is not running right.

start with that as stated, then if it still isnt running great, then think of the last time it had a tune up.

Tomorrow I may be taking my car to a mechanic. I've seen 4 different Beretta's there and i'm thinking maybe he knows a thing or two about their motors and such... I'll let ya know what the fix is for me. I know one thing I need is the Catalytic Converter replaced, because that's causing a ton of back pressure, but I don't think that's your problem :P

There is your answer why... He has a compounding issue thats created other issues such as killing his cat.

Start with the o2 sensor since thats the code, they typically go bad in around 60k miles for older units... the newer vehicle ones are still only said to last 100k...

well replaced the o2 sensor, that was fun. it seemed to run fine for a couple min the the idle dropped below 1k and started chugging again. SES light kicked on and engine idled at a steady 1k, then light would shut off after a while and start chugging again then same light back on and steady idle at 1k. Any ideas what I should check now? oh yeah throws just the code 45 now not 44 and 45

Do an ohm check on your injectors and if you have the ability to do so try to check for a stuck open one.
