I keep searching for a 5-speed GTZ but keep coming up empty handed.  But I've seen a couple Z26's in the area with pretty low mileage but are obviously automatics.  Now personally, I find auto slushboxes a bore to drive, so I was wondering if and how difficult it would be to swap the autobox off of a 3100 and replace it with a manual.  I'm guessing with the clutch assembly and whole bit it's probably not worth the time.

This is actually becoming a little more common of a swap, there are a few, Geoff (heavywoody) I think has done it, but he had a 3400 dropped in too. It is doable, I'll wait for the experts to comment, as I'm not nearly as mechanically inclined as them.   But to answer your question, it is possible, and how difficult would probably have something to do with how good you are with your hands.

There are 4 Berettas I know of with a 3x00/5-speed: McGavin, Geoff, Elroy and Aaron. I am looking to do it eventually (just got another lead on a getrag) and Engray is currently looking into it as well. It's not the most rare, because the 3x00 granny tranny sucks and most people hate it.

Asked the same thing a found out the you can't really do it on a '96 because they only made autos in '96 and there are conflicts with the computer and whatnot. If I ever do an engine swap, the auto tranny is going also. I wouldn't say it's not worth it, because driving an auto is no fun, but for now, I simply don't have the money.

Hmm, that's strange... Jason's (Elroy) car is a 96.

While I know that there are cars like Geoff's with 5spd 3X00's.  But I believe there are some minor drivability issues with surging.   This would be regardless of 1994-95 or 96...or even 97-98 N bodies.    You should be able to get everything to work, to work better the PCM's would need to be programmed to optimal settings for the manual trans.   In my opinion 1996 is the best year to do this swap to as you can flash the PCM, and there are no plans to do this to the 94-95.

I'm just relaying what I've heard. Is his car car like that factory or did he do a swap? Because I'm not saying that a swap is impossible, just that it would take some work. As opposed to it being a simple task in any other year

So 95 is simple compared to 96?  Where are you hearing this?

I'm in warren MI.  I might have some time to give you some pointers if you give me a heads up.  Hell, you could come look at the car and I could show you what you need to do someday.

Jasons car runs fine but he has told me that he gets 2 shift solinoid codes coming up but engine/performance wise it runs perfectly fine.  I am in a bit of a money situation right now due to hours being cut at work so I dont have the funds needed to rebuild the getrag and I am still searching for a new interior style console from a 5 speed and need a new shift cable due to mine bending in the middle... (dont ask haha) I just don't know what is all exactly needed down to the littlest thing yet... I heard the engine sits lower??? or it needs to be rotated a little... I might find this out when I get the transmission out first of all but I am still peicing together sorta a preswap guide unless someone has it written up... Id pay for it and im sure many others would too!

Aren't you in the process of doing a complete write up on the swap Geoff??? I don' t mean to be bothersome because I am sure you get asked this a lot. haha.

I have a writeup that is mostly complete. IIRC, it covers most of all the little things... I don't think it has the wiring in it yet though, or pictures inserted.

Ok, so what if the equation was changed to swapping a 5-speed to a '91 3.1 auto?  Would that be any easier?  Wonder what the $$$ would be to do perform such a feat.....
