3400 swap

So here is the deal. I have to convince my uncle to let me use his garage so I can do the swap since he has a lift and engine hoist.  My dad talked to him but he did not stress the ease of the install.  I want to know what kind of experience you guys have that have done it and how long it took you.

I also want to make sure I understand everything. I did the 3400 top end swap about two years ago so I have some knowledge and issues covered(egr, alternator). I have read the guide from 3400swap.com a number of times.

The only two things I am unsure about.  The guide talks about changing the power steering up. I am pretty sure the one I have now will  work fine ,but I want to make sure.  The other is the hook up for the temp sensors. I understand that the 3400 has only one spot for sensors and the 3100 has 2.  I want to know if people spliced it or tapped the head.

Any other tips or info is greatly appreciated.

i would say a couple of weeks for the swap if you know what your  doing.  if you dont then it might take more. i was thinking of doing a 3400 swap but i need a V6 donor car. and i dont want to mess with that at this time.  not sure on the sensors

Its 2 days or less if you really go at it.  Theres a 3 wire ECT sensor you can use.

Your power steering pump is fine because you have a 3100 to begin with. That is only if you had a 3.1mpfi gen2, then you'd need to swap PS pumps.

You can tap the head for the extra sensor, or try the 3wire ECT. Not sure if that will work, read up on it...

Oh yeah the timing cover will need to be swapped from your 3100 or grind something off of the 3400 cover. Check out McGavinZ26's website he did the swap from 3100 to 3400 first and talks a little about it.

I also want to know what route you guys went with the exhaust manifold. Did you use the 3100 or the 3400 w/ new downpipe?

You can use the 1996 temp sensor instead of 2 sensors, you just need to make a little wireharness adaptor thing.

On my 1994 z26, I swapped in a 3400 and kept the oringinal exhaust manifolds from the 3100 and the oringinal power steering stuff too.  Check my website for more.
