So the Shop told me twice now that there is signs of leaking intake gaskets.i have 96 base v6, auto with roughly 100k. from what i understand this is a common problem and chevy's replacment gaskets are junk? im assuming there is a better aftermarket gasket out there? any help would be great. also what would be a reasonable price for the job. they are talking like $550.

Get Felpro gaskets from any auto part store! They should have them in stock. You can do the repair yourself in a couple hours with a basic metric socket set. I also recommend doing new injector o-rings at the same time. They might come with in some sets? Not sure.

The repair is fairly straightforward. The newer GM gaskets are metal instead of plastic, although this is on the 3400, which I'm not sure if they updated the 3100 gaskets for the small port or not.

Yes, the repair can be done at home but you may want to rethink the "easy" to moderate difficulty. There are some portions that have to be done exactly correct, such as keeping parts in correct order and tightening/torque specs must be followed.

I have done the repair myself previously. It isn't too bad, providing you prepare yourself well.
