I cannot win.. EVER! :(

So.. my GTZ broke again. Oil has been leaking and I don't know from where. I opened her up a little on the MassPike the other day (4-5k rpm) and it has had a fresh gasket job and timing chain within the past year. Yeah.. now idk what happened but it rattles like a mofo now anything over 2k rpm. I need to take it to a mechanic and get it torn apart and diagnosed...

DOES anybody have a LOW-MILEAGE w41 quad four engine? I would seriously consider replacing the entire engine and calling it a day. I need help, I knew how to work on the 3.1L v6 and the 2.8L v6, but I am stupid and have no idea how to work on a Quad H/O.

I will let you know whatever the diagnosis is as soon and I find out and then come to you guys for advice. I'm depressed that I have to go find another car to drive in the meantime. :(

If you don't want to bring it to somewhere and can hold out for a week or so then I might be able to help you diagnose it and solve the issue.

This rattle. Coming from the TC area by chance? Kinda sounds like your TC tensioner might have crap the bed.

Thats what I was thinking in my head since I know someone at work who had to do his timing setup twice on his 2.4 twin cam Cavalier motor, I know not the same exact thing as the quad but very similar in the timing chain aspect of things.

I just had the entire setup, chain tensioner guides etc replaced literally 3 months ago with brand new replacement parts from rockauto. IDK if thats the issue it sounds more towards the bottom end left honestly.

Timing chain could be locked up too, if the tensioner blew.

WHAAAAAAT? so I paid this douche to re-do my timing chain + tensioner + guides + etc (the whole rebuild bought every part myself) and they may have screwed it up. Would that permanently damage my engine?

It could be anything right now but yes you could have paid someone who f-ed up your engine and honestly if you could prove it you could hold them liable, but thats going to be hard without having HIM take it apart so he can't say someone else messed it up.... and at the same time you'd have to be there to ensure he doesn't change anything to go in his favor.

This is why I do my own work, since if I screw up its my own fault and I don't have to play the blame game and deal with that crap.

Let me know what you decide doing and I will try to help as much as I can.

You could have also lost oil pressure or got low pressure and just spun a bearing... That would be the simplest fix... find a decent crank if the one you have is trashed beyond repair have it polished or turned if necessary and replace the bearings, and hopefully the rod is not hurt, but 9 times out of 10 its good practice to replace the rod that spun a bearing.

Bottom line you don't have a hole in the side of your block so it's probably best for you to salvage the engine you have since they are not easy to find around here.

why did you have them do the timing chain on it in the first place?

wouldn't now be a good time (if it's indeed the cam issue) to replace the cam with w41 cams.. I mean I wanted to do the w41 conversion anyways.

If you have the stuff yes but if not I wouldn't stress the wallet any more than it could be right now.

I'm just saying if I have to buy cams in general I'm already financially screwed so I might as well get the better ones. does orckauto have w41 cams?

rockauto wont sell w41 cams, it's something your going to have to find and who said you need to replace a cam anyways? Right now your looking at either a spun rod bearing so you would need a crank and possibly a rod, OR you have a timing chain that came off and has now locked the engine from getting stuck somewhere with no tension and you might have bent a valve in the process of doing that if the timing got messed up in the process.
