Want some new struts? What brand springs to buy? How much camber to run? What brake pads? What's the best setup for your situation....

universal sway bar

Post by JeffD »

hey guys, has anyone experimented with a real rear swaybar? i mean one that actually reduces body roll, not just stiffens the axle. i took a quick look on summit racing and found some kits that could mount on the body with links to the axle. kinda pricey, but it would seem that it would give better results. http://m.summitracing.com/parts/HRE-23718

Well, these are for racing applications for one. And two, I don't see how much more of an advantage these will make over say an FE7/Z51 equipped Beretta will have. Especially if you upgrade springs, shocks/struts and apply tower braces front and rear as well.

Here's a custom setup on an Achieva SCX! Slight overkill perhaps! :D

I was just going to make my own. Not sure where people have gotten those from. I already have a really nice one for the front. Going on the Z this year. :D Polished aluminum with "Beretta" etched into it. Kinda sharp. Not sure who made that either, but I know there are several around.

Edit:

Actually I had to go look. Its an MRZ one. 3 pieces, pretty cool I guess. My next "build" Beretta will be more modded, but that's a ways off.

Right, the one for racing would actually mount from the body to the outer points on the twist beam. reducing body roll between body and suspension in a similar action to the front bar. Now, I know that too stiff is not good either, but what I was curious about was whether or not it would be a benefit to be mounted to the body. what are the thoughts on this?

The strut bars for our cars came off of a few Cavalier models and maybe one or two others. If you're going to try to pull one in a junkyard, pull it and then size it to a Beretta there as they made two different models of them for the Cavis. You want the one that does not have the mount piece that extends further down the strut tower.

As for sway bars, there were two available from the Factory for the Berettas; a smaller, hollow bar and a larger, solid bar. You want the larger solid one for sure. But if you are even thinking of spending that kind of money for that one you saw on the Summit website, just buy the Addco rear sway bar. Done. It is larger than anything offered from the factory and bolts right on. I have it and could not be happier!! And then, if your car doesn't already have the internal rear sway bar, get one and bolt it in as well. You will need to modify the triangle support pieces for the Addco bar, but this will net you the best result. SOLID!

That MRZ strut tower brace,is nice looking but it being a 3 piece doesnt make sense. I have one on my girlfriends Alero and it works great for a bit then those bolts dont hold after a while.. Starts slipping. So it needs to be welded into one solid piece.

That's easy enough. I have access to an aluminum welder. Was thinking the same thing actually. Though it is pinned sorta. The pieces are stepped, if that makes sense. Will try to get a pic of it, I had never seen one like this before I got it.

Edit:

Scratch that. These are slotted 3 bolt mounting. Meaning that the piece is adjustable to fit, but once fitted I can easily see how it would slide. But I think I have a way to fix it. Going to put "teeth" into the mating parts so that they can be locked together, but still adjustable. Not sure why they built them smooth.

To clarify, berettaboi was asking about rear strut tower bars, Cavy's are front. For the front it's the 92-94 Cavalier strut tower bars that fit a Beretta. Pull the right year and you won't have to size it up!

Neon rear on an L body, never heard about that? MRZ makes a one piece steel one for the rear that is actually functional unlike the bling crap one they make for the front that loosens up and I hear also requires grinding to clear the alternator!

Has that been all 5-speed people though that had that issue? I know it's specific to the V6 and since he had a quad I'm not surprised he overlooked that but it should be fixed.

That bar on that Achieva is about what some run on Modifieds at a race track... VERY aggressive.
