...I was reading some old threads about having the EGR or not. What is everyones current thoughts about blocking off the egr? I allready have a breather filter on the valve cover anyways...so i think most gases just blows out into the air. Lower intake temps , but higher combustion chamber temps?? I dont want to blow her up just get some better throttle response and no more carbon gunk build up.

Just removing it will make the CEL illuminate...

possibly not on an 88 though since it's VAC controlled... I doubt he would get any SES light.
Having a breather on the engine has no positive affects to the combustion chamber temps either. The EGR is mostly used at cruise so you will probably not see any improvement in throttle response. As far as carbon buildup, most of that is coming from the age of the engine. If you have a nice new engine you wont see that due to less oil deposits being burnt.
Put it this way, I still have a working EGR on my 12sec car, but some disagree with most I say and do.

Disabling the EGR will kill a little bit of gas mileage, but it's not crucial.

It has always seemed to me it was more of a PITA to get rid of it than to keep it.
If you can get away with not having a SES light then that would be ok. If you can not then you must get a custom "chip". Then the block off's.
With my 90GT I looked at it this way: how long the old one lasted and how long a new one would last(if you buy a good one that is).
I have also heard that a few people have had problems after they took off the EGR even with the "chip".

I took my EGR off in my '89 2.8L and have had no problems what so ever. I didn't notice any gains nor any faults to removing it. I did in fact fail emissions but to solve that I just put the EGR back on and went back with the 3 days or so for a free re-check. I do not get an SES light. In my mind, the car is lighter, the engine bay looks cleaner and there are less carbon gasses going back into my engine.
