steering wheel 'jump' over bumps

So I went and picked up a 1991 Corsica 3.1 auto 129K.

Seems to steer and ride fine, but when going over certain types of bumps in the road the steering wheel (and column?) moves up/down pretty noticably. It happens over actual bumps in the road, not in dips. The 89's don't have any issue going over the same road.

Its almost as if the car thinks i went head-on into a curb. That's the best way i can think to describe it.

Yes, or the firewall is rusted out where the steering rack bolts to the firewall, not uncommon. Ya better hope it's the tilt bolts though!

Where are the tilt bolts? And I hope the rack is ok. The car is rust free.

It doesn't matter if the car is rust free. The firewall rusting out and the steering rack busting loose is a result of having a leaky wiper cowl caused by a sealant leak.

Ah yes. My Beretta leaks onto the driver's side. The 89 Corsica doesn't leak at all. Not sure about this new car. I think it's dry, as before I picked it up it rained pretty good most of the previous week.
