I came here from Seattle Washington to be a 24/7 caregiver for my elderly Mother. Gave up everything to be here and help her with her needs instead of packing her off to some uncaring nursing home.
My uncle, (mothers brother) gave me an old 1989 Chevy, Beretta he had to drive so I'd have a way to get her to her doctors appointments, and run all of her/and our personal errands.
Back in November, 2 weeks after bringing the car to NC, from Viriginia, getting insurance, title, and tags, it broke down.

Since I have to spend my time here 24/7, I can't get out to find some work, so we are living off of my Mother's income only, which is very limited to say the least. So I have very little way of getting this car running, believe me I've tried.
It has something to do with not getting proper fuel, fuel pressure, etc. You can shoot starter fluid in the breather and it'll start and keep running as long as you keep feeding it starting fluid, stop, it stops. It'll try to start on its own, but just won't stay running.

Because of the age of the car, I ordered a diagnostic code reader from JC Whitney, first reading I got coded it needing a MAP sensor, bought that, put it on, same thing. Then it coded needing a Throttle Position sensor, bought that put it on, same thing. But now it's coding needing a MAP sensor again.

SO, I tried using someone recommended by a lady in the Senior Apartment building my Mother lives in, who had done some work on her car. He immediatly said it needed a fuel pump which is in the gas tank, so I went and bought the fuel pump. And I also ask him to bring a fuel pressure guage when he came back to drop the tank and install it. WELL, he didn't bring a pressure gauge, but assured me that this was the problem, (I just had a feeling it wasn't.) I had already check all the way from the tank to the intake and it was getting plenty of gas. But he came recommended, and I'm at his mercy at this point.

WELL, long story short, that wasn't the problem and HE still made me pay him for installing it, plus I'm that much deeper into it for the price of the pump. SO, I'm into this thing close to $500.00, out of money, and still no way to take care of my Mothers needs.

IF THERE'S ANYONE OUT THERE WHO THINKS THEY CAN HELP ME GET THIS CAR RUNNING, I will do and pay what I can, (agreed on before any work done, for your and my best interest)

Sounds like its not getting fuel via the injectors, which we all know can fail in those years of cars pretty commonly. He has already replaced the fuel pump. He can check for fuel at the rail, by simply depressing the test fitting (its like a tire valve). It will spit fuel if its has it. Then its either the injectors not getting power, or the injectors are screwed up.

thanks...i will try to pass that on. hopefully he will sign up and get some info first hand. this is the best place to learn and share info about our cars. even if he isnt a fanatic at least a car will be saved!

did he replace the fuel filter? $10.00 part and 2 mins to change...
