1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
1992 Beretta base model, 230,000 mostly highway miles. VIN 1G1LV13TXNY281929. Clear PA title. Available for pick-up. Will not deliver or ship.
Body: "Maui" Blue, repainted circa 2003, needs repainting again (peeling hood and trunk.) This car has no noticeable surface rust. Body has no rust holes. Minor dings, no other body damage.
Corroded rear coil spring seats. Don't know whether this is repairable. I do not need the car and do not want to put any more money into it. If it is worth repairing, it could be a good, solid, reliable car for someone who is handy and does not want to spend a lot of money. If not, it has lots of good parts.
Engine: 3.1L, strong, quiet, runs smoothly, great acceleration, capable of 30 MPG on long interstate highway trips. Averages 23-25 MPG in daily use. Have tracked MPG since I have owned it. LIMG replaced at 200,000 miles as result of visible external coolant leak.(no coolant leaked into engine.) Engine is clean, no leaks. Passes PA emissions tests annually and has never needed work to pass emissions test.
A/C needs recharge (R-12) or conversion (was quoted $200 to convert.) Apparently has slow leak. Recharged in 2011 and slowly lost refrigerant.
Transmission: automatic, 3 speeds (no overdrive.) Shifts smoothly and correctly. TCC solenoid sticks, is disconnected.
ABS system needs work, possibly new module.
Replaced radiator 2011. Replaced hoses, heater core, water pump 2009.
New steel brake lines, 2011.
Tires 18 months old.
When I bought it in 2005 it had pretty severe wet carpet syndrome. I sealed the firewall and plenum and it seems to have stopped; carpet was out for several years until recently and car has stayed nearly perfectly dry since repair. Driver seat upholstry is torn from wear and tear; currently have aftermarket seatcovers on front seats and looks fine. Interior is fine otherwise; carpet, rear seat, door panels, headliner and dash are in good condition.
I have driven this car 1000 miles each way non-stop to Florida 7 times with no problem, most recently in December 2011. Runs very well and very smoothly on the highway.
Kelley blue book value $1000-$1400 (repaired). Asking $400 OBO, AS-IS, where is.
Located in Valley Forge PA area.
If not sold soon, will donate to charity. I need to transfer registration to new vehicle and cannot store un-registered in this town.

He can't post photobucket links, but if his photos are below 3 meg he should be able to use the board uploader.

Yes, I tried including pics in the message, but every time I tried to attach a picture, it brought me back to the login page and my draft message was wiped out. I will try adding pics by editing the message. Thanks!

Looks like you got it to work. BUT for future reference If you get brought back to the login page its due to your session timing out. Best way to prevent that is use the check box for log me in automatically each time I visit... And then when your done if you want you can log out so no one can just go to Bnet and post as you on that PC. When you have that check box checked you will not get booted, however there is still a 15min timeout on the reply box, so if you over wait that you will get a Form submitted is invalid and it should still have what you wrote though to re-submit.
People may want some pics of the underside and the rocker area FYI since those are two rusting areas.
I can see a bit of rust in the open door photo so unfortunately the underside may be compromised.
Best luck with the sale!

Re: 1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
Hi - pics are up.
I said "Body has no rust holes." When I made my original post, I had honestly forgotten all about the rust on the inside door jamb/rocker panel on both sides, where it is rusted through. The car apparently needs a new fuel pump (engine cranks but won't start, but roars to life with a quick burst of starting fluid) so I have not driven it in some time, and since it's only visible when I am getting into or out of the car, I forgot about it until I took the pics yesterday.
I will submit photos showing all of the rust (rear coil spring seats and door jamb/rocker panels). Those of you with more experience are better judges than I. The car has passed PA inspection every year with little noticeable deterioration from one year to the next, but of course eventually you cross the threshold where it is too far gone.
The car is now at my mechanic's for an evaluation of the undercarriage rust for PA inspection purposes. If he determines that it would pass inspection and is worth the money to repair the fuel pump issue, I may have that done and get the inspection done; otherwise, the car is to be sold as-is to anyone who can do something with it, or donated to charity for scrap value. I do not have much time to deal with it, as I don't want to leave my mechanic stuck with it in his lot, but I really do like the car and know the folks here are enthusiasts with far more knowledge than I have and want to save the car from the junkyard if it is viable. BTW, FWIW, the guy who towed it this AM to the garage told me he thought it was a nice clean car and if this mechanic thinks it is not worthwhile, I should take it elsewhere for a second opinion.
Thanks for reading.

Attached are the images showing the rust at the rear coil spring seats and the rocker panel/door jambs on both sides. Also included is a picture showing the most significant surface rust spot on the visible portion of the body - near the fuel filler door. It's smaller than a dime. Too bad a car that externally holds up so well has such a propensity to corrode in less visible areas. I guess that is partly why they call it the rust belt.

I think some people would like pics of underneith, where one would place a jack, at the front and rear.

Re: 1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
The jacking points for the OE jack are solid, as are the spots where you'd place a floor jack. I am waiting for my mechanic's opinion and will post here. I will also try to get more photos of the undercarriage.

Re: 1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
remember that he is asking only $400... dont expect to be able to just put it on the road... for selling just above scrap value, it is amazing that you are taking the time to take more photo's and disclose everything you find, thank you, you are one of the finer people in the world, (if i was in charge, i would let you re-populate! and castrate many others... lol)
on the other hand, that is a mighty hole in the door jam... very common, but pretty far along that is. rear spring perches, just as expected

Re: 1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
Thank you for the input, Berettaboi. I am mainly concerned with finding a home for what has been a very good car, fun and easy to drive, in event someone can make use of it. I hate to see a car that has life in it sent for scrap, but I am unable to store it and am not in a position to put the money into it which it needs and there is no third alternative unless someone else wants it.
Re: 1992 base model FS - Valley Forge PA
OK, my mechanic just put it on the lift and said that while the car is very clean otherwise, it's not worth it for me to put the money in to repair it. That's because I have two other daily drivers already. The spring perches need replacement and the crossmember between needs repair.
It also needs a fuel pump; he confirmed that.
It may be repairable for the right person. Or it's a great parts vehicle, since the rest of it is very clean and in good shape, with many new parts including brake lines, radiator, water pump, and the engine has a relatively new LIMG.
If interested, please message me. I am going away for the weekend and when I return I will donate the car to a charity, if no interest here. I cannot keep it in my mechanic's lot for too long.

Since there appears to be no interest here, I will likely donate the car to Purple Heart or a similar organization on Friday. Unfortunately, I can no longer keep it.
