I might be getting a 3400 from a 98 Van, my girlfriends dad is thinking about scraping his van, has a ton of KM on it and the trany went last fall and its just been sitting, hes still deciding if he wants to sink more money into it or not. but if he scraps it he said i could just have the motor. It runs good but has high clicks, i would probably use it to rebuild and throw a cam in it while its apart and have a nice motor for the Z.

Free is always good lol. if i have to spend 500 for rebuild kit and a cam it will be a cheap motor.

Put a cold air intake on the Z the other day and took a few new pics.

For a engine that has 257,000 KM it sure is clean.....

Also picked up a dual tip stainless muffler at the swap meet/ flee market thingy on the weekend for 20 bucks, it was cheap and i needed something so i can get it pollution tested this week. it works for now. had to cobble it up a little since i couldnt get 1 piece of pipe to reduce small enough.

That filter looks a bit close to the MAF. I know there is not much room.
When they are made again snag a CAI from Styluss. These 3100's are top end engines and the WAI/short ram is just adding to that. The CAI will give you a little more low end.
Time to start working on the TB.

Oh and thats a 3400 Throttle body i forgot to mention i changed that as well.. i had to swap the throttle leaver from the 3100 to the 3400 TB since the cables go on different. and actually where it meets the intake there is only a very slight lip for the size difference, i think the intake is actually slightly larger then the 3100 TB to start with...

the filter is actually attached directly on the end of the MAF.. there is a shot aluminum pipe on the TB side and a coupling to the MAF then filter. the vent tube is hooked into the one coupling, and i havent put the IAT sensor in anywhere yet im thinking of sticking it into the rear of the filter fitting. it runs fine with it just hanging for now..

The short intake and that filter is very very noisy, when i kick it down it sounds like a air plane under that hood but it sounds pretty sweet. and it seems to really like that TB and intake setup, it made a noticeable difference.

The Z kicks butttttt, i thought it felt slower then my 88 5 speed... but now that i have drivin it for a couple of weeks and jumped between the 2 cars.. the Z is way faster in the top end even with the automatic. i can be doing over 100 KM and kick it down and it drops down a gear and just screams over 4,000 rpm and just goes like stink. i havent passed a car yet that has kept up with me.

I may end up with a free 3400 but has like 400,000 KM on it lol from my father in-laws mini van, but it will probably be a winter project and rebuild it.

This car is so dam clean... every single part on it is factory i think, at least looks that way, no one has ever taken anything apart or tampered with it.

You think the top of the engine is clean you should see down below i can clearly see the gaskets between the trans and stuff like that, its spotless. i did do a little washing and de greasing under the hood, but it cleaned up like its brand new.

the car has been owned by 9 other people, but 4 or 5 of them was the same dealer ship LOL. the guy i got it from has owned it for 3 years and i dont think ever turned a wrench on it, he took it to a garage to have the oil changed. its been in the city its whole life. i dont think the kid i got it from really drove it hard either, he was pussy footing it the whole was to my house following me, and i had to drive it pretty hard to get it to get the cobwebs out of it, probably the hardest it has been driven is the last 2 weeks i have owned it LOL.

So far i have put new front breaks on it, new muffler, and i need to find a rear right marker light to get it certified.

It has a clunk in the front, i noticed it when i got it but its been getting worse, at first i thought it was the axle but im not so sure it is now. when i come to a stop it clunks 1 way then when i take off it clunks again, on the right side. when i go over a bump it clunks as well. not a click but clunk. something jolting around.. maybe ball joint ?? it drives straight and smooth. has a slight vibration at times but barley noticeable..

Ball joint, or like my current issue, one of your control arm bolts is rusted bad enough to allow play and it will move front to back.

Could also be strut, or upper mount.

i dont think its the strut, i was thinking more the ball joint. the 88 i think needs upper strut mount though it just raddles constantly. and i think its not the axle because its not clicking and no vibration coming from the front, and it does it either way i turn or over bumps. will check it out when i have a chance to jack it up and look.

Taking it for safety tomorrow, it needs rear marker lights but ill pop those out of the 88 for the day until i get my slip LOL. i know of a couple at the JY so once i get a chance ill be grabbing them.

Been a crazy busy week, i do lawn care, and we just started cutting grass this week only it rained monday and tuesday, so the 2 of us are trying to cut 48 lawns in 3 days. Need to get some go go juice LOL. havent had time all week to do nothing with the retta. tryed to get it in for etest today and they are booked solid until next week. no good for me i need it by saturday since my 10 day permit runs out. going to try and get one done saturday, cant see why it wouldnt pass.

Cool on the 3400 TB. So there was no need to blend the intake?
Control arm bushings are a common thing for these cars.

After i bolted the TB on i run my finger inside and could just feel a small lip, i know when i bored out the TB on my 88 3.1 i didnt have to do the intake as it was already a little larger.

Eventually maybe i will pull the intake and grind it out a little, but this winter i would like to do a 3400 build and swap into the 96 so im trying to do the least to it as possible. i had the TB laying around and its a pretty simple thing to bolt it on without having to tare into it too much.

All i done with the TB was swapped out the throttle rod since the cables hook on different, and the throttle plate holes line right up and fits right in.

My SES light is coming on, i cleared it when i got the car like 2 weeks ago and it was a week before it come back on, so i just checked tonight to clear it before i take it for etest tomorrow if i can find a shop thats not booked up.. its got a EVAP. Fail to something on Purge..... something to do with the canister possibly, but it runs fine even when the SES light comes on. ill see how long it stays off for now just a pain to look at the light on all the time lol.

You could always do the newer 3100. Big ports and everything. I'm not sure about the temp sensor thing. There are many to help here on that and other things.
The canistor no longer has the purge valve on it, it's near the coils(under).

Got my safety slip but need to fix a couple minor things. the sliders on the calipers are sticking. 3rd brake light needs bulbs. and the clunking in the front is control arm bushings, you can see the rear ones just starting to pop out but ok to drive still.

Booked for pollution test tomorrow hopefully that goes smoothly.

Question.... Does the MAF have anything to do with shift points to amount of air being sucked in ? once in a while when i kick it right down if im just taking off say in 1st, it will miss shift in 2nd. like red lines and almost like it goes into neutral and then back into gear. if im driving normal it shifts great, if im in 3rd and kick it down when it goes to 2nd it does the rev up thing. doesnt always do it, just sometimes like once in every 25 times i kick it down.

I was thinking maybe changing the trans fluid and put a new filter in, no idea if its ever been done and it has 258,000 KM on it now, the fluid looks fine and looks really clean. maybe i just need to let my girlfriend drive it and it wont get driven as hard lol.

I think i need a 3400 sooner then i planned.. sitting at a red light today a newer gm truck beside me guy tryed to beat me, i stayed right with him but when we got on the highway he was slowly pulling away. my friend got smoked by a Infinity a couple days ago i think it was a G38 or something i dont know, my friend has a 98 ish audi A4 turbo 5 speed, the guy blew the doors off it after we hit 3rd gear that infinity hauls balls...

I need to do a 3400 with a cam, headers, TURBO and a good tune, that should surprise the hell out of people that try to run me at the lights.

All in all i am happy it passed safety, now ill keep my fingers crossed for pollution test, should not be a problem runs great and smooth no smoke no odd smells.. has factory cat and resonator, scanner shows no miss fires or anything like that, has a EVAP code that comes up randomly once every couple weeks or so it kicks on.

And also when i had the scanner on it, it shows my A/C clutch was on... the heater controls for vent and floor is for A/C.. for mix it only has defrost and floor on heat.. the 88 has vent and floor as mix for heat, so all this time i have been running with the A/C on for heat LOL.
