I still have a hard time believing that a fork went bad when you had it all apart and you didn't notice anything wrong with them... I would think for the fork to break due to the mileage on the trans that it would have some visible wear or something you should have seen wrong.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
Jon, when I split the case I changed the bearings that were easy to get to and the seals...that was it. I didnt have a press to take the gears off the shift shafts and dig into it. It shifted perfectly so I didnt see the need to have someone dig into it. Rodney Dickman recommends not getting one rebuilt because most people do not know how to assemble them correctly.

Yeah you need a 2 ton press or better to get the gears off the shafts.Guess it could be a fork because thats what puts it into gear before the sycro. The biggest problem is they rush and don't shim it right. You need a special tool to set the preload on that bitch.lol
Ask me how i know?

Yeah but you can't see the forks with how far apart you had it?woody90gtz wrote:Jon, when I split the case I changed the bearings that were easy to get to and the seals...that was it. Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
The forks just "fork" the shaft and come out easilly iirc. I'll find out when I disassemble my trans for weba. But I thought I had them out before
But yeah shimming that diff is tough.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
The old man's "new" 2000 Mazda pickup's 170k engine puked Friday, so we pulled the 78k engine out of his old rotten 98 pickup Saturday at his place and the new one at my place. I guess it's payback for all the projects I wrenched in his garage over the years. I haven't touched the Beretta since October and he's already done a brake job on the Buick and now an engine swap in his truck in my garage this spring! I had to yank the dead Cuda out his garage (the one that I towed from Rochester) with my truck to get his parts truck in there.
I guess it goes to show, your garage is never big enough...no matter how big it is. He's got a 3 car that's full of immobile junk. haha

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
Well, as an overdue update to this thread...I bought another trans in NC that Geoff picked up for me. Less than 100k on this one. The plan is to swing by and grab it on the way down to FL for our honeymoon. After the wedding I'll have some time to work on it finally.
I miss this car, it's a great DD in the summer time...the truck just isn't as fun.

I was wondering when I'll be able to unload that POS haha.
When are you guys heading down or back up to grab it?

I'll have to check with Tiffwad for the exact date, but it will be on the way down...probably 6-12? After our 7 days in FL we're hitting Nashville on the way back and possibly Carlisle if all works out well.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
Update on the old beast: basically nothing!
I got the low-mileage trans from Jihoff and it's pretty rough. In this case low mileage does not mean good condition... So at the moment I have 15 gears and still haven't touched the car yet. haha Barry gave me a set of shift forks as a wedding present, and as long as everything looks good inside...I think they will be the replacements for the trans currently in the car since it shifted beautifully.

I think this may be the first Beretta to start rusting in a garage since it's sitting so long.

It'll be a year in October. And it might end up being that long! Who knows...

I got a "60k" "W41" motor from the same guy... I decided to check the bottom end before I throw it in the car and its a good thing I did... Cyl 1 was a bit rough and it already had aftermarket bearings in it.. who knows. It has the 086 head and the year stamping being a 1992 is correct but I still haven't seen proof that its got W41 cams or not yet. Who knows. I'm kind of in the same boat and thinking about just fixing the motor that's in the car.
