UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
went to look. i need your honest opinions. the car seemed to be mechanically sound. there was a small scrubbing noise when you turn the wheel all the way to either side. it didnt sound like it was coming from the wheel itself but more like behind the fender wall. my father in law said it could POSSIBLY be the power steering pump. i have no clue.
the good:
seemed to be mechanically sound, no knocks pings etc
good take off
ran at good temp
111,000 seems good for a 94
haynes manual
clear title and carfax
spare tire
newish tires
the not so good:
cosmetics!!!!!!
paint was ok but where it was bad it was bad. large chips and surface rust
seats were in typical condition with the driver side tear
of course a/c issue
vinyl on dash was starting to roll up from the windshield
driver side door wouldnt unlock with the key
weather stripping around the windows was in bad shape
driver side front quarter panel was slightly off line. my father said it could be from being jacked up improperly
DIRT DIRT DIRT.....who ever drove the car before was a god awful pig!
speakers seemed to be shot (nice after market radio though)
one of the ac vents was stuck shut
everything in the interior needs to be attacked with a screwdriver......loose console, glove box door. etc
fuse box door was duct taped on.....poorly
door pull on passenger side was cracked
the seat belt trim was missing on passenger door
the door panels seemed to have broken tabs here and there
brake light panel under the trunk lid was broken
hubcaps were factory and of course should have been thrown away 10 years ago
small dents in the hood.....4 i think
i may think of more later. here are some pics.

the old 3.1 is an excellent and reliable motor. It's just not very fuel efficient and is a dog in terms of power. The tranny is a 3t40 3 speed which is a great trans but can't take the increased levels of power unless you do some crazy rebuild. If you've got a 5-speed that came with a V6, you've got very little to worry about. Those things are monsters and can take crazy amounts of power.indyyellow wrote:So is the 3.1 a good motor? Any querks with that one? How strong is the tranny for a 1990?

Yeah, it looks a bit rough, being a rental at one time, in my opinion, would be bad, as it probably had a bunch of diffrent drivers beating the piss off of it. If I were you, first off like SGR said $500 tops, and I'd just hold out, till' I find one thats in better shape. From my personal Beretta experience, if you wait, and search daily, you will find a good one, just be patient. If I can find out where your from, I'll do a quick search, and see what kind of options I can come up with for you. If you don't care how it looks, and just want a good running car, go for it, but I wouldn't buy it myself.

Is this anywhere near you? It's a bit more $, but it looks to be in 100% better shape, and it's the same color combo. It also appears to be a late 95', as it appears to have DRL's. I just took the zip code of fayetteville, and put it in on autotrader, and it says this is 91 mi. away from there. Just figured I'd try and help ya out, good luck with it all, this low mileage one, to me, looks like the one to get, if you can.

yea i saw that one in chartlotte and asked about it. the guy was a jerk and wouldnt budge on the price. this one in fayetteville isnt as bad as the pics look. the motor seems to be in good shape and runs fine. the cosmetic stuff is a bit rough but i like a project and will take my time. i think it has potential and i'm not after a show car.
now as far as the price goes, i am going to work on it. i think its worth a little more than 500 even if it is nothing more than 500 dollars worth sentimental nostalgia.
i told the guy if he would fix the a/c PROPERLY i would come back with an offer. so we will see. the wife looked at it and approved so it cant be that bad
