On both our 96, 3100s, SES light came on when a coil died. Also when the head gasket started going out we got a code first for the rear oxygen sensor, followed by the misfire code for the cylinder that was leaking and wetting the plug and causing it not to fire. So two codes there.
If you don't have any SES light, I wonder if the bulb is burned out. When you turn the key on, it should light, if it doesn't then the bulb is bad and you have codes that can be read at Autozone.
Which may help you get down to your problem.
If you are not losing coolant, then maybe you have one or more bad fuel injectors. When cold, only cylinders of the bad ones will misfire, but later as the ox sensor warms up, the computer sees the engine running lean and enriches the others causing them to begin to misfire.
You don't need to throw money at it, you need to dig in and check things out.
Pull all the plugs and see what they look like. You can find info online as to what they should look like. Run the engine and look in the coolant tank, if it has bubbles coming out that is one sign of a bad head gasket.
