i did a little more sanding late last night and got a pretty decent smooth surface. you are right as hell though it is a PITA b/c the paint is so hard. i might do i high spot run with my palm sander then start the smoothing process since i have good layers now. it also seems to sand easier when its dry. i have turtle wax polishing compound that i am going to use once i get my sanding accomplished.

don't sand it dry if you want a polish look and you will need 500-1500 grit paper, and you'll see that works better when wet since the paint will not build up on the paper as you use it.

i have been using 2000 for the smoothing and also have heard of using steel wool to get it super smooth.

2000 is ok too but you'll be there forever getting the high spots down, thats why you need to start with say 500 or 800 to get it smooth, then use the 1000-2000 to sand out the scratches and then move on to buffing and polishing... Its not easy.

Just about exactly what 3X00 said... You're on the right track. But you should have listened to my Instructable in the first place and used the foam brush! Now you'll be sanding for days. BUT, when you finish the sanding you can buff to a damn near showroom shine easily. You will need a power polisher/buffer to do so properly.

See here: http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master ... paint.html for advice on the polishing. That is the write up that I based mine off of.

i did quite of bit of sanding today with 150 grit paper and it did a number on the orange peel so thats a positive. i also did some test polishing. while the results were....meh....i must say it was better than i thought. i'm going do borrow my father in laws orbital sander to help tackle the hood and trunk. those things ended up a mess with the humid weather. as did the front fender. i almost want to junk them and get new ones from the JY. the other parts i sanded down with 2000, rear panels and doors, and they look promising.

ryan, go ahead and give me a virtual slap!

my wife let me down too. i painted my jeep, that i no longer own, a few months ago and swore i would never try to tackle a paint job again. she was supposed to slap me too!

here's another kick in the balls. theres a z26 across town on a used lot. my old man mentioned it today so i may roll over and check it out. when you are looking for one they are rare, when you buy one they are everywhere

If your father in laws orbital is not a high speed one, it wont vut the mustard. You have to use a high speed polisher to get it done properly.

Started washing the beretta, basically within 15 seconds of washing her it started pouring, and even worst, I got all of the leaves off of her (including the ones that bunch up in the wiper cowl dip thing and start rotting) and it got windy too and started dumping leaves all over the Beretta. She wasn't too dirty though, since I've been regularly hand-washing her weekly, sometimes bi-weekly.

Also, offtopic, but were berettas painted with that orange-peel style paint, my Black GTU's paint looks like orange peel style (Hope I'm talking about the right thing haha) If they weren't that would explain why the paints so nice and isn't peeling at all.

Not really, that's just the angle of the photo playing tricks on you. How does yours look without a ford part holding it up? lol
