There is no way to prime the lifters. I see no point in putting new bearings in. There is alot to be done with that and you have high miles(you would have to pull the engine). I'm not going into the rest. A newer engine would be better. How is the trans doing?

The trans is fine,could use new tranny fluid and fliter but otherwise works well.99,000 is high miles? my 92 jeep cherokee has 252,000 & my 89' honda accord has 220,000.

This chevy beretta was bought new in 94 by my wife's sister.she paid $16,500 I still have the dealer window sticker.she seen the car the other day and wants to buy it back.she gave it to her son and i bought it off of him in 2003.been sitting since. I paid 500.00 and put a new windshield in it when i bought it.I put new parts where needed(gaskets,brakes,plugs,wires,needs 2 tires.


Do you think it is worth new lifters.thanks

No 100k is not high miles. I have almost 223k. I have yet to replace the lifters or do any lower end work. I have replaced the LIMG once though, back at 212k. However, just because yours doesn't have as many miles doesn't mean it won't need lifters. Providing the lifters are what's actually causing your engine knock! If the body is in really good shape, and everything else is good, then yeah, fix that engine, or drop in a replacement if its bad enough. It would be worth it.

By the time you buy lifters and all the associated gaskets and such, you could likely buy a low mileage engine and it's probably less work.

2nd that Eric. After 150k I always have a fear that the timing chain will go out(just adding another problem). I know many have gone way past that, but it's a ticking time bomb.
Ace did you change your chain yet?
I had mine changed in the 3.1 at 180k. The one in the 3100 is at 150k and the fear is there.
What I'm trying to say Jeff is the car is down right now and it would be a good time to change the chain. This adds to the cost and then you are back to looking for a new engine(if the cost would be close). I know that you have a fear of getting a engine that has been run hard or not taken care of. Take you time and check all options before you jump in.

I plan on changing the chain anyway,heard the chain tensioner can make a bunch of noise. Just glad it isn't a belt on this motor.

i have fine metal filings around my AC Compressor,and now see the air don't blow cold no more.and the metal is being thrown into the belt and harmonic balancer area,any ideas?

If I have to buy a used motor that's fine.I just want to eliminate all problems first,I have seen many on here that have same problems as mine,changed out there motor and it turned out being something else.(cracked flywheel,busted motor mounts,)

I just diagnosed a 2004 chevy surburban,that everyone I talked to at the parts store said it was the fuel pump.I changed the fuel filter still wouldn't start.I got online and started researching and told him to put 2 gal. of gas in it,It started right up and has yet to be a problem,he paid me 150.00,told me I saved him 500.00. when the 04 surburbans get under a 1/4 tank and then sit all night they all have this problem.Don't believe me google 04 suburban cranks but won't start.

So I basically got paid 150.00 to change a fuel filter,and search online.

When he would turn the key,I was able to here the pump running for like 10 seconds,with the gas cap removed.

I also noticed on mine the main rear exhaust back by the firewall is pretty damn close to my tranny,I can't even get a finger in between the two.

I am wondering if my lifters have that water/oil gunk from when the gasket went out,maybe they are blocked solid,I would think my rocker's should have alot more oil on them.It's dry up there,but hasn't been ran that much either.

If I blow this motor up then I will know what to fix,Then I will get another motor.

Car is very well worth fixing body is straight,no dents,factory 16" wheels.only thing is the rear spoiler is faded.

Best way to pull my 3100????? top or bottom?

The whole 1/4 tank thing is a symptom of an old car.

My California original Quad runs rough at less than a 1/4 tank, likely due to crap in the tank, but I'm not going to drop it just for that.

Lord knows what's in there! Water, debris and maybe a dead goat for all I know.

Just keep it above 1/3 and it runs perfect. LOL

My 92 Jeep is the same way,below 1/4 runs like crap,like you said there could be a goat in there for all we know.lol.

Shamokin Dam? I lived in Pa for 42 years,just moved to Tn in 2006.I was from Mahanoy City.

His 04 does have 123,000 on it and he paid close to 14,000 a month or so ago.it came with like 4 dvd screens in each rear seat.no warranty,I thought he paid to much,but it is optioned very well,5.3 V8.123,000 isn't that much considering the truck is 6 years old.20,000 miles a year down here isn't nothing.(Highway miles) every which way you turn.
