Finally - A BERETTA OWNER ONCE MORE! :)
Re: Finally - A BERETTA OWNER ONCE MORE! :)
Ah, come on!
My previous 93 GTZ's original engine had two problems - The head gasket at around 100,000 miles, and then about 4-5 months later it spun a rod bearing, probably due to the damage caused by the bearings soaking in coolant.
After replacing it with the Bilmar engine, I never had another problem out of it. Granted, I think I only put ~30,000 miles on it, but even after I sold it, the next owner had it for another 5 years and didn't have any engine issues.
Granted, the Quad4 is not a longevity engine, it will most likely do fine for another 100k - Not that I'll probably put another 100k on it - I'd like to try to keep the mileage as low as I can on this car. It currently has 124k on it.

With all the lifter problems these days I hope you got the right ones.

Re: Finally - A BERETTA OWNER ONCE MORE! :)
Well, waiting on more parts. I have been getting everything together and am waiting to do the final assembly on the engine.
Hopefully my timing chain set will be here before the weekend, along with some specialty Quad4 tools.
I was able to have some parts, including the intake manifold and blower housing sandblasted and refinished. Before the engine goes in, I'll be resealing the couple of small leak points in the engine bay.
Ugh, I really REALLY R_E_A_L_L_Y and looking forward to getting this engine back together and in the car. I've spent WAY too much with this Quad4 rebuild, but it'll all be worth it in the end. I just really want to get behind the wheel. I've had the car now for almost 2 months and have yet to spend more than 30 minutes total in the driver's seat (and that was sitting in it admiring it!).

That's more time than I have spent in my Beretta. LOL try $3,500 and two years. That was my Camaro engine build. But I know what you are talking about.

I'm trying not to... Looks like Rock Auto took my money and failed me... I paid for rush shipping on TUESDAY but my parts won't be here until next Monday... Go figure.

It took ALL WEEKEND (first time reassembling a Quad, had to make sense of the pile of bolts as well... BUT - It's all back together now. I still need to install the water pump, but aside from that, it's READY TO REINSTALL!
It is nice to see this pile of parts getting smaller as I get things together.

Re: Finally - A BERETTA OWNER ONCE MORE! :)
More progress this weekend; I had to take the timing cover back off and retime the engine; I was one tooth off. I spent Saturday doing that, getting the water pump put on, and I pulled the engine cradle out. Gave it a coat of paint and called it a night.
Today, I tackled a few things that were still left to do in the engine bay and got the flywheel, clutch and trans bolted up. I got the engine/trans mostly installed - Apparently my main pass side mount is warped (or not the right one?) because even when I took them both off the car and engine, the bolt holes were like 1/4" from where they needed to be. VERY irritating.
But, oh well, I'll have to fab something to make it fit.

You guys are funny rolling engines under cars... lol that's what a hoist is for
Maybe it's just the fact that a 3400 is just SO top heavy that I don't bother trying it this way, but I keep sticking to my trans jack for the trans out the bottom and then the motor up and out the top.

I left my engine in this time and took the trans out the bottom. Actually just got the trans back in yesterday.
I don't know about the quad mount...never played with one.

Even the official GM service procedure has it coming out the bottom.3X00-Modified wrote:You guys are funny rolling engines under cars... lol that's what a hoist is forMaybe it's just the fact that a 3400 is just SO top heavy that I don't bother trying it this way, but I keep sticking to my trans jack for the trans out the bottom and then the motor up and out the top.

Yeah the GM dealers have lifts, though. haha I had to get the car way up in the air to do my 3400 and that was with the struts out. It would need to be even higher with them installed.
Dante I just noticed the blue on the cam towers. That's a nice touch. I think the IDI cover would look cool with the ribs painted blue. I did them red on my old 90GTZ with white letters and it looked pretty cool. Would be even better with the quasar ribs and alum lettering.
