Re: 96' Z26 (Stalling) HELP!

Post by 2.2H8TA »

Damn, I guess I'll get in contact with him and let him know what I'm experiencing. This sucks. Any Idea on what he may have done wrong, so I can have him check? It's not like I have the money to go somewhere else and have this job redone. I know he'll fix his gently caress up for nothin', as he alreddy has once. Thanks for sheding some light SGR. Why would this just happen occasionally, and not all the time?

Could've been the TB gasket, could've been the upper plenum gasket, couldn't say. But I'd bet money one is leaking more often than not, so you're getting the erratic idle. But common sense points to that as it idled fine before getting the LIMG's done and now it doesn't.

It's just weired that it only does it once on cold starts, and then when I restart it, it's fine, and sometimes it's fine from the get go.
It seems like once it gets warmed up it corrects itself. Could it possibly be somthing as simple as a crappy fuel filter or something like that? It never stalls or idles weird after the 1st time it does it. Also on the getting a new mechanic front, I have that covered, but the new guy is the one who has no clue what it can be. As stated previously the TB needs to be cleaned, could that be causing this?
Sorry for so many ?'s, but I'm trying to give and get as much info as possible before I have it looked at again, and as always I appreciate the help.

Cleaning the TB is quick and simple to do. Give it a shot. Also check your IAC for carbon build up on the shaft and spring. Clean it thoroughly as well.

Generally an intake leak will present itself fairly regularly ,yes. BUT, it will always be worse cold. Think about it. Nothing's gotten hot or "swollen" (god that sounded bad.. :P ) yet.

Could be a simple fix like a dirty IAC. I'm making a few assumptions here based on the fact that presumably your car went INTO the shop running fine sans leaking LIMG's and came out with a crap awful idle at times.

Well it had a little bit of a problem before we got that job done. When I first got the car it had a bad idle, and I had a vac hose which was melted replaced. After that was replaced it was ok, but I recall before we had the LIMG's done it wouldn't stall but I would back out, and it would be fine, and then I'd put it in drive, and when I first got on the gas it would stutter a bit. This was also on cold starts. When it did that I'd get off the gas, and back on it and it would be fine. I originally thought it may be a fuel pump or filter, or maybe injectors, or old plugs and wires.
After the job was done, it got new plugs and wires, and it now has the stalling problem. I really don't remember if I had any problems in the time between the intake job and the plugs and wires, as I think it was a next day thing. Only real problem was that the guy forgot to put a washer and a nut on a stud, which in turn rattled and expanded a plastic clamp inside a large nut on the back of the block, in turn causing that coolant leak. He fixed that problem correctly it seems.
I'll have all that crap cleaned up and see where that gets me first. I'll update with the outcome when it's done.

Doing the LIMG now. Just found out that the front upper gasket split on the front side of the car. It's a Fel Pro, so I didn't think that would happen. Unmetered air getting in there.
This may be your problem too.

I have listed the car on cars.com for sale to see if anyone bites on it. I really don't wanna sell it but if there is a buyer, it will be sold. If anyone here is intrested PM me. Like I said I'm just putting it out there to see if I can get anything out of it, and if you see my ad, I know, the price is crazy, but if your intrested make me an offer. I'm still gonna be using it, and fixin' crap as I go along, like I've been doing. I'm mainly doin' this to get my dad off my ass cause he is getting sick of havin' crap go wrong with it, as it's the only car we have at this time. It really don't bother me, as I knew what I was gettin' into when I got it, but with me being out of a job at the moment, it's kinda hard to keep dropping money into it. Hopefully I'll get some work soon so I can keep it. Just a heads up for everyone on here.

Yeah, you know, I don't think the car likes my dad too much, 99% of the time when we experience some type of problem, he's drivin' it LOL. It's only stalled on me once, and hasn't stalled on either of us in a while, but the event leading to this was yesterday when he went out, he started it up, and the AC clutch sounded like it was grinding or something (I think). I was out at the car talkin' before he left, and he started it, and it sounded weird. He only ran to the store, then I went out for a little drive, and it was perfectly fine, as it is the majority of the time when I drive it. I don't know, I have no real plans on selling, but like I said if the $ is there, then I'll sell this one, and probably get another. Hahaha.

Just guessing on that the idling is caused by spark plugs/spark plug cables requiring replacement.

Guessing that the odometer is throwing faulty readings because it was calibrated to a different size wheel circumference. I don't know the process on how to modify it, but taking it to a dealer is prob the only legal way. lol.

I was just gonna bump this, the plugs and wires were just replaced, less than 1k ago, so thats NOT the problem. The odometer is not "throwing faulty readings", it just stoped because the cluster is bad, and there are stock Z26 wheels with the correct size tires on the car. All the other gauges still work! I see your guessing, but please read before posting!

Bumped for sale. I wanted to clarify that coolant leak I had a while back has been fixed properly. It was the heater hose connector at the block which cracked from the plastic clamp vibrating inside of it, because the guy failed to replace a nut. The washer, and nut which caused this have been replaced, and the heater hose connector, and plastic clamp have been replaced, so no more leaks. Also I have not had it stall or idle oddly in weeks. I use the car every day, and have had zero problems. I'm going to have it checked out on monday, along with an oil change.
To theycallmeSS, if you see this, PM me with an offer ASAP, as there is someone else intrested.

I would have given up on the 3100 long ago and just done a 3400 swap so if you keep the car, maybe check into doing that.
