Could someone please explain the differences between ceramic, semi metallic, metallic and organic brake pads? Also, if a rotor recomends that semi metallic pads be used, what problems could arise from using ceramic pads?

ceramic has no brake dust, semi metallic are what a majority of brake pads are made of and there are many different formulations, organic do not contain metal and are not recomended for performance use.

I have never had a problem with any rotor when Ive used ceramic pads and my dads a mail man so I know a few things about fixing brakes.

I was told that if you have drilled or slotted rotors that ceramic pads shouldn't be used because the rotor doesn't heat up enough for the pads to be effective. Is there some truth is this?

The real rule to follow is do not mix metallic pads with non-metallic rotors.  Some rotors are produced for organic pads only and the metallics just grind them up.  Also be carefule with the ceramic pads on performance as they work well when hot but that just lets you push them more and heat the rotor and warp it or hot-spot it.  Some cooling method is HIGHLY recommended due to that.
