Loud Lifter

Post by Lacuna »

I have a 96 3100 Beretta, Its had a lifter tick for a while, but today It got LOUD, I want to replace my lifters, which i know how to get to and how to replace, but I just want to make sure im not doing any unnecessary work, what exactly needs to come off? Just valve covers, or intake also, do i need to remove my fuel rails? Ive never had a motor broke down before, Im very mechanically inclined and believe i can do anything when it comes to a car if the money is there for parts.
Iv'e also heard alot about piston slap and was wondering about that.

Valve covers, intakes,PS pump(you can leave the lines on),EGR/tube unhooked, upper mount(engine needs to be supported) and TB heater line. Also the coolant by-pass tube and the one that runs around the engine(that one can be just loose).
Piston slap is do to the fact that GM no longer sizes the pistons to the bore. Anything to save a buck and time.

Order a pizza and use the box to keep the push rods in order. The exhaust push rods are not the same size as the intake and if you mix them you will be in trouble.
keep'em flying!

Are you sure about that? :P Just poking fun.

I'd personally try to clean up the lifters first. IE drain out a half quart or quart of oil and put in a half quart of auto trans fluid or lucas oil and drive it for a couple hundred miles and drain the oil. I've had it clean up lifter ticks before. But that is if it's a lifter tick and not piston slap.

But if you want to replace them.. As Money Pit stated above^^ That's how you do it. If you do go that route, buy the fel-pro metal lower intake manifold gasket kit. It'll help prevent further maintenance concerns. Also replace the oil pump drive o-ring. But make sure that you put the pushrods back where they came from.. it's very easy to get them mixed up. When they get mixed up, the piston will hit the valve and bend the valve. You don't have to remove the injectors if you either disconnect the lines.

Thanks, both of you.
I'm not planing on removing the rods. I was told by a dealer mecchanic, that when the replace the lower inake manifold gasket, there are three places you can cut and put it on without ruining the integrity of the gasket.
And I may I try the oil treatmeant, turns out I was low on oil, (bad LIM gasket) I added some 10w to it and it made it quieter, which means its not piston slap.
But I can't do anything till I get a little bit of spare cash.
