From 2012 to about 2015 the solar system will enter a higher energy field in the galaxy.

This will cause increased reactions in the sun, which means greater chances for a solar flare to strike the earth and short out the global electrical grid.
One solar flare went near the planet, but missed it, if it hit it would have been damaging.

Other than that, I'm still waiting for the zombie apocalypse!

pretty much true as well, solar flares always happen.
But the energy cloud in space that the solar system is entering is causing greater chances that solar flares will happen, which increases the chances it will hurdle towards the earth and cause an epic light show!

There ARE some reviewed theories out there that explain past extinction level events are caused by our solar system passing through the leading edge of our galaxy. This area is the compressed front (the way our galaxy is traveling through the universe) which contains excess radiation. Extinctions seem to happen on a 62 million year cycle, give or take a couple million.
