95 3100 SES light
Im new to 3100s and cant scan the car.
Sometimes while driving and sitting the SES light will come on for about 5 seconds then go away. While driving the SES light is usually preceded by a slight hesitation with the RPMs dipping into low 1000s almost like when the fuel cut off is hit on the governer.
I changed the fuel filter and the PCV is ok. What else should I be looking at?

Parts store can't scan it?
Seems like the EGR is a common problem.

Sounds like something EGR related, is it usually highway speeed, or is the speed not a factor? Trying to get a parts store to scan these 94-95 cars is a pain, here's the website of a scantool that claims to work with our cars. 94-95 GM Maybe you could check it out, then go to the parts store, and help them a little. Rather than paying the $300+ for a scan tool.

Hmm while driving it dips down to 1000, is that while at speed, or just driving around a parkign lot? If it's the later it could be the IAC valve. You may have luck cleaning it with carb cleaner, and then lubing it with ATF.
The SES sounds like EGR, and the idle problem could be un-related.
Scan it and find out first, some codes will be in there that don't trip an SES light as well.

Advance Auto only uses a SC9140 and we need a SC9145 or better to scan these cars.
Retail on that scanner or better is $399 I believe.
I replaced TPS and that was part of problem. Im thinking that the IAC is the other half. We will see come this weekend.

Hi there here in PA too. I have a 95 too and no local parts store will be able to scan it for you I just got done dealing with that they will say yea then you go there and they can't...The local GM dealer can but they will charge you like $50-$75 to scan it. I lucked out a local garage scanned mine but then he couldn't test my abs light.
It sounds like a EGR problem try cleaning it. And I agree idle might be some where else could the timing be off? Or maybe need a tune up like spark plugs and wires I had a Storm that would do that when they needed changed.
GOOD LUCK WITH IT !!!!!

Highly unlikely the timing would be off on a 3100.
Let us know what happens with the IAC.

In the process of fixing and replacing most of the vaccum lines and changing out the IAC for a new one, everything is fine now.
No hard starts, no weird idles, car goes into OD fine now, easy shifting, and HVAC controls work.
Thanks.

Hmm. New vacuum lines? Mine are fine, except for where the battery acid ate through one of them one time, I replaced the section but by the vacuum tank it sucked some acid in there and the tubes cracked. I put aquarium air line tubing to connect them and it's held up for 3 years now, even though I really should do a less "ghetto job".
Sounds like you had a vacuum leak though if your trans was shiftting hard. Means the actuator/whatever it's called that has vacuum to it was not getting vacuum. Oh and the HVAC is another sign. Both happened when my battery leaked on the hose.

There were no lines coming off the tank and the one from the intake going nowhere. There no lines going up to the HVAC controls either.

Recently i just replaced the clutch im my car and when we got the engine back in i took it for a spin around the block and i couldnt fingure out why it was droping rmps like you are talking about. and come to figure it out is that there is a vacum hose that goes to your purge box( under coolant box) and that hose kept poping killing my car and making it want to drop arms and die. check that hose it could be that problem
