broken brittle hose on a canister below the battery?

If you have a vacuum leak to the TB it will run rich, although that is speaking in obd1 terms. I had issues for over a year before I finally plugged the vapor and egr ports (89 2.0). I suspect I had a broken valve in the vapor canister.

Does your cruise control work?
I had the same problem with Jim's '94 I brought back from California.
Steph and Erich found the broken vac line under the battery.
Trans worked better, engine light stopped flashing now and then and the HVAC was fixed and the cruise worked.
Lots of stuff run off vac!!

after repairing the broken hose yesterday.....

hvac changes settings
idle is smoother
trans is shifting smooth

All things that are controlled by vac, so to say the least I'm not surprised that those are now working properly. When the trans sees no VAC the pressure is at max, hence the harsh shifts before.

A little off topic, but some of the very old Cadillacs used vacuum to operate the power windows -a former co-worker of mine bought a pristine '60-something Sedan Deville to accompany his '50-something Deville, and the windows were vacuum-regulated!
