Indy 3.1 dies once warm

Post by Blacklit »

First off, my guess so far is mainly pointed towards my fuel pressure regulator. Want my Indy on the road finally this year, so I'm finally gonna start workin on this project again. The car runs 100% with no codes or anything. Once it gets fully warmed up, it begins to sputter and then dies. Won't start up again til the engine is cooled back off. Any other ideas other than possibly my regulator has gone bad? Thanks in advance.

Get the ignition module checked. Possible it could be the crank position sensor. Do you have spark when you are trying to crank it after it dies?

ICM can test fine when cold and be bad when hot. So if it tests good and you still have the problem replace it. 90% of the time the ICM is the problem.

When the fuel pump died in my GTU a few years ago (I think it was the original one, with over 160k miles and over twenty years old), the car lost power, sputtered and died, then started right back up again once the car sat for a while (long enough to cool down, coincidentally). It did this twice, by then I had gotten the car home, and put in the correct multi-speed pump and controller for the 3800 SC that had been in the car for about a year already. A fuel-pressure gauge should indicate if your problem is fuel related, be it pump or regulator. Also, check the ground on your ECM -a simple continuity check from the case to ground will work. Check this also with the O2 sensor unplugged -the ECM can ground through the O2 sensor during cold open-loop mode, then loose that ground once it switches to closed-loop mode. Odd,, but it happens. Other than that, ICM or CKP (Crankshaft Position Sensor) are your most likely culprits, as already stated. Good luck.

Bad injectors. I know of several other instances where this occurs. The alternate, is once is up to temp, it won't start till it cools off. I would do a measurement of your injectors while cold, then after they are heated up. This will tell you for sure.

The ICM I know I've tried as a suspect already. I have 3 spare ICMs and the problem still remained. I haven't messed with the Indy since last summer. The fuel pump went bad on it and replaced it. I don't recall this issue prior to that tho, so maybe the new pump has an issue. I had to exchange the first one I got from the parts store.....it was bad all together. I'll get my fuel pressure tester on it when it's cold and also warm once it dies. It's gotta be somewhere in the fuel system.
