Engine tick
So this car is trying to give me a heart attack. I seem to have suddenly developed a tick in the engine. I also noticed that it feels like I have lost some power. I took a video of the sound, sorry for the constant movement, I was trying to figure out where it was the loudest. Just did an oil change today. This is after the car has been running for about 25 min, went for a quick highway drive. Should I be concerned?

Re: Engine tick
So I thought it sounded like the timing was off. I just put on new Herko coils yesterday and after that is when I noticed the sound for the first time. I put the old GM coils back in (only changed them because I was doing plugs and wires) and bang, all my power came back, tick still there but much less noticeable than before. I also just did a seafoam today, only left it the crank for about 40 miles then changed the oil and filter (Quaker state full synthetic, K&N filter). I also added a small bottle of Rislone zinc treatment with the oil. I put the additive in first then filled and checked the oil till I got right on. Only going to leave that in for about 1000 miles and then a fresh oil change.
Moral of the story, Herko coils garbage.

Re: Engine tick
I have never heard of those. My guess is that they are made in China?
Now I thought zinc was for engines older than the 80's, is that wrong? Oh and use a Wix filter, they are better over all than a K&N and many others.

Re: Engine tick
I checked, there was nothing metal loose. I will switch to wix on the next change.
The bottle said it was good for 97 and older. This is what I used :

THAT is not the result of an oil filter!

I think it was a bad coil. I wasn't saying I thought the oil change had anything to do with it.

Re: Engine tick
Did the sound go away after putting the GM coils back on?

Re: Engine tick
Pretty much. There is still a slight tick, but you can't hear it standing next to the car with the hood closed, you really have to be listening for it. Before you could hear it with the hood closed 20 feet from the car. I feel like at least one cylinder wasn't firing with the Herko coils. When I started the car with the Herko coils it felt like it barely had the power to turn the engine over. Once I put the GM coils back on it roars on start up and my throttle response came back. I didn't have a bad coil, I just thought since I was doing plugs and wires (ACDelco wires with rapifire plugs) that I would change the coils to. I requested a refund on the Herko coils, which I got all 3 for only $30. The price should have been an indicator that they were junk.3X00-Modified wrote:Did the sound go away after putting the GM coils back on?
The only reason I mentioned the oil change with Rislone was I thought the sound might have been valve tick, but it got worse as the car warmed up so I figured that couldn't be it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but valve tick tends to lessen as the car gets warm right?

Re: Engine tick
Depends on what's causing the valve tick... if its a gummed up lifter then yes that could go away with getting warm because the oil thins out and will pump up the lifter... if its something that is mechanically wrong like excess clearance than sometimes that will get worse with warming up. It sounds like those coils were just crap and screwed up the ignition pretty good. GM coils hardly have to be replaced unless you are experiencing a misfire, and I would strongly suggest replacing them with something that is at least $30 each for a coil.
Re: Engine tick
Every engine I've had has had some form of a tick. Even the 6.0L in my 2500HD has some piston slap in the winter and a consistent lifter tick that is loudest when it first fires up.
Even my old 1.6L Honda used to get monthly valve adjustments because of how much it used to tick.
Just as long as you still have good oil pressure and there is no loss of power or anything like that. LOL

Re: Engine tick
No it's not. It was just a tip, after reading the oil filter test that Bob's the Oil Guy did I feel the need to pass on that info.Asylum wrote:THAT is not the result of an oil filter!
