Strange A/C issue..

Post by GTU89 »

The A/C in my GTU blows ice cold when moving (doesn't matter the speed) but once you stop it blows gradually warmer until it feels like outside air (~95 degrees outside).

Any ideas?

EDIT: Also figure I'd mention the fan seems to work fine.

You have one of three problems, a weak compressor, A dirty condensor, or you fan is not working

My 89s always had crazy fan pressure switches. Just disconnect the fan switch from the high pressure line, then the fan will run with the a/c.

As long as your fan will cycle while sitting then I would say yes the fan is fine. If the fan runs all the time then Id say dirty condenser (high head pressure)

Fan runs at all times with the A/C, the previous owners cut the fan plug off and twisted the wires together, worth trying to reverse the polarity to see if they had it backwards? (IE. fan blowing in reverse)

There is only one fan on these, correct? I know some cars have a condensor fan, but I'm thinking these don't. (mine doesn't)

The fan seems to feel like it might be blowing out the grill (both upper and lower grills), although it could just be the air "bouncing" around and coming back out the front.

Well even if the fan was turning the wrong way the blades would have to be turned around. So the polarity is not a problem. They most likely twisted the wires together because the fan would not kick on. Sounds like it needs that sensor. I am not sure if you need to pull the freon out or not with that sensor. I have not messed with them.

Anti-freeze was a bit low, added it up to the right amount and now the A/C works fine at all times, doesn't cycle on and off like it did before, and blows ice cold when sitting, left it idle for 15 minutes with the A/C on and all was fine.

Is there a coolant switch or something that was messing with the A/C?

That is strange... Perhaps the ECM thought the car was overheating (due to the low coolant level) and prevented the A/C from running all the time?

My Turbo 300ZX (Nissan) didn't seem to have cold A/C (digital climate-control system), until I got the car out on the highway. It wasn't a dirty condenser, a bad fan, or a faulty sensor. The freon pressure was a little low, maybe the compressor was weak too, but once the engine RPMs kicked up, the A/C worked like a freezer, too bad RPMs stay low when the car isn't moving, huh?

That is odd. But what ever works.
