Car wont start.

Post by holloway103 »

i have a 88 beretta 2.8l gt automatic, 80k miles

I've had the car for about 2 months ran fine fired up first try every time only problem i seen when i first bought it was my rpms were at 3.5k at 70mps..

Then one day i was in my car was going fine down the road then like maybe 15 miles down the road it sputtered to a stop... then it would start back up go like 500 ft then do same thing agian.. after bring it home.. it will only turn over acts likes it gonna start. then dies. then just cranks over. i tested fuel ,as well as changed my fuel filter, and pumps fine i here it all the time. spark is good just replaced all wires and plugs ,

from what i keep hearing it could be the tps, cps, or even my mass air flow? Some one plz help me out

I just got done doing the MAF delete and upgraded to the IAC air intake from an '89 or '90. The MAF on the '88 is very problematic. My symptoms were different but wouldn't be surprised if that was your problem as well.
80k miles on an '88! ? ! That's awesome! I thought I was doing good with only 93k.

How much? I picked mine up for $800 in perfect running condition. If you bought yours with the starting issue I'm sure you got it really cheap.

Since my last post i have changed fuel pump mass air flow sensor, map sensor, crank position sensor, throttle position sensor, had some one come over and check my spark with a actual tester, as well as my fuel pressure which is runnin about 45-50 psi.. Any ideas why it still wont start.

It will fire up how ever if i spray some carb cleaner or gas inside of the throttle body.

any thing will help.. Im outta ideas.. PLEASE HELP>>!!!

sounds like it may be a bad fuel injector... when one shorts out it will kill the whole bank. Time to swap in some used ones and see.

you can also ohm them out to find out which ones are bad

check also the injector harness while you have it apart it may be corroded

I second checking the fuel injectors. If you can check their resistance, it should be about 11-12 ohms.
Might be a lot easier than replacing them. Harbor Freight sells a cheap volt-ohm meter.

Well as of last post.. I replaced all my injectors.. due to not wanting another one to go bad.. Now my radiator Fan Wont Come on when car gets how and i got no read out on my cluster inside on my car. I tested fan took it out and hooked a battery up to it and it about flew out of the vice grip i had it secured in. so i know my fan works.. any idea why it wont come on when it gets hot.. I did replace thermostat. and sensor below thermostat

Do you have digital or analog gauges?
