gauges stopped working
gauges stopped working
1995 Berretta base model with 3.1 and 4 speed automatic tranny. Today , my daughter borrowed my car. When she returned home she says" Dad, I think your transmission is broken". Well, I took a look at it and yes the tranny wasn't shifting correctly and all the gauges wasn't working. I checked the fuses and fuse #9 was blown. I replaced it and took the car for a spin. Gauges worked , shifted fine until #9 fuse blew again. Anybody have any advice or maybe some schematics. Car has 160,000 miles on it. I bought the car cheap and put the tranny in. The car did set for about a year before I bought it. I have put about 2000 miles on car since I have gotten it running. Another thing, sometimes when kicking down off high beams to low beams the switch doesn't always work. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it. Thank you for any input

Re: gauges stopped working
high beam switch is just out of adjustment, its bolted under the dash to the column and you just need to loosen two screws to adjust it closer to the wheel so you don't have to pull the lever so far.
As far as the fuse 9 issue this is what it controls... you'll have to check all those items and wires going to them to see if something is shorting out.

Re: gauges stopped working
Thanks for the diagram, that's exactly what I needed. I found the high/ low beam switch this morning and already adjusted it. You were right, it checked good just out of adjustment. I got it adjusted. Heading to the garage now and dust off the old volt meter.
Re: gauges stopped working
Check the plug for the rear defroster. Does it work? Mine meted a few years ago and a fuse popped. I believe it was number 9 fuse.
Re: gauges stopped working
Rear defroster does work. I pulled gauge cluster out because the I thought I had a burnt out bulb. I figured I could look at printed board connections. Board connections look good, bulbs are all good. I haven't found a bad looking connection yet. I'm still on the hunt.

In topic hijack,
Where is the adjustment went under the dash my bright's don't even want to come on. Then again the lever is completely snapped off and has some jackwad thing for the turn signals. It pulls back, but the bright's don't come on nor does the light on the dash.

Re: gauges stopped working
Check headlights fuse first. If good, I would check head light switch. It sounds like you aren't getting power to headlights.

No he has the same problem as you he just doesn't know how to adjust the switch that's located on the column under the dash........... <<<<<<<
Dont know how else to explain it to him so he will go out there and look to see what I'm talking about.

He means the indicator for the high beams doesn't come on, but it wont if they don't engage.Hawk2010 wrote:Sorry, I assumed different problem because my dash lights work ,gauges don't. My bad. Thank you for the help

Re: gauges stopped working
Precisely. The reason I pointed that out was to eliminate blown bulbs. Since I assume the indicator would still light if they were blown right?3X00-Modified wrote:He means the indicator for the high beams doesn't come on, but it wont if they don't engage.Hawk2010 wrote:Sorry, I assumed different problem because my dash lights work ,gauges don't. Re: gauges stopped working
Still no luck. Short to ground comes and goes. Blows fuse at 2500 rpm driving down the road. It stays shortest for about a half hour then opens to ground. Automatic door unlock doesn't work. It did before. I'm gonna look at that circut tonight. I unpluggd all connections when shorter except automatic lock module. I just haven't located it yet. I might have to get a compass and breaker to check harness. I'm about to split this circut up and add fuse to run tcc, gauges, egr. This is giving me a headache.
Re: gauges stopped working
I found the short. Mouse chewed harness in dash over radio. Got it fixed.
