code 42

Code 42 is a problem with the Electronic Spark Timing circuit.  Maybe a faulty ignition module.  The manual also says a loose MEM-CAL in the ECM can cause a code 42.

code 42

When my car was a 4cyl , it had a code 42.  Previous owners replaced the module to no avail. along with other , or probably all ignition-related parts.

The problem was a bad ground wire from the module.  Just gritting your teeth into this mess and CLEANING that whole area and probably re-wiring the ground should solve the problem.  My car was dirty and when it heated up, the car would just DIE at all loads and all rpm.  When cold it could be sluggish.  oh eyah, GAS MILEAGE is a huge factor.  I bet its just this wire.
