Relocating 94+ Battery Tray???

Post by 90GTZHO »

Can someone tell me how they are relocating the battery tray slightly on the 94+ models with the newer plastic tray for their intakes? I want to complete my cold air intake setup but im not sure how you guys are moving the tray. I pulled the battery out and unbolted the tray and it seems to be sitting in a couple valleys, so when i kick the tray out slightly, its sitting unlevel. How did you guys mod the tray to make it work and still be able to bolt it back down?

Thanks Guys!

I don't remember moving anything around with my tray when my battery was in the engine bay; maybe 95's have different trays? That or I notched it. I don't remember.

I've not ran into that issue. However, you could make a "spacer" using a quick setting polyurethane or rubber joint filler to take up the void that is causing the uneven surface.

Geoff your 95 is the same tray. And my new car is a 95. I just generalized on the subject of 94+ tray cause the tray is the same from 94-96.

Don't remember what I did(Styluss CAI). I'd have to look, but I think I bent the tray some and moved the battery toward the core support. I did it in a way that angled it some(toward the engine in the back) and still was able to use the stock hold down.
Oh well I have time Thursday so I'll look/take some photos. May need to pull the battery. Damn as if I don't have enough to do on a warm 45 degree day off. I'll try.

I'm not sure if the Tranzgenic intake (Styluss CAI) is 3", I think it is. I don't recall having to modify anything for it. Do you need a picture Geoff?

I have 2 3/4 on the Cavy so for sure the Styluss is 3in(it's just a little bigger).

I remember I had to do something with my 95 for it to fit. I don't remember exactly what though. Here are a couple pics of the ol' girl.

...I 'simply' relocated the battery behind the engine on my '90 Turbo 'Retta to get more space in that area... I pulled the HVAC blower housing out, notched it a few inches, and welded in a new tray. That way, I have all the room I need by the throttle body. Of course, I was moving the original intercooler there for the NACA-style hood-scoop to feed... Now I use that space for the ECM, MAF, CAI filter (still force-fed by the NACA scoop  ), and intake lines running from the turbo to the front-mount intercooler... In theory, I have a better weight-distribution too. :pardon:

Without going so extreme though, I would just bend the edges of the battery-tray down where you need the battery to go. It looks like Woody's battery moved a little inboard and angled a little.

I can see it was moved inboard just a little bit. Problem is, ive examined the tray quite thouroughly and.have found no way to move the battery without doing some chop work to something. Doesn anyolne have any other pics of what they did as well as installation pics of the tray?

Maybe something is different on mine but I don't remember having to chop anything... Also I think on my 96 due to running and optima battery I don't need to move the tray since it does not have a square corner.

I'll take a close look Tuesday, going to snow like crazy(so I'll take off work). As 3X00 said, I also don't remember cutting anything.
Do you have a photo of yours without the battery?
