washing z26 seat covers

Have a full set of covers, whats the best way to go about washing them?

That's a good question because the "rods" in them to hold them to the seat are cardboard... unlike my wife's forester where they were actually steel. The best way is probably by hand with spray cleaner a brush and a wet/dry shop vac.

Yes but the rods that secure them ARE CARDBOARD.... I don't for-see that surviving the machine.

I went to a dry cleaner and they said that it might dissolve the thread depending on what its made from. Does anyone know that detail?

I used foaming carpet cleaner on mine and a wet towel to clean it off. It did seem to dry them out some though.

Yes I had a look at the link it's an at home dry cleaning kit, hence why I was asking about dissolving thread.

It's more or less of an odor eliminating kit. The only way to know is to try it out on a test cover from the junkyard if you are not a high roller gambler and want to try it out on your current covers.

Anything you apply (heat, chemicals, moisture ...) to what you have will all have a chance at "dissolving" what you are cleaning now. Even if you took your car to a pro that is known to be top notch at detailing work will have you (at least should) sign a release of liability document, if you should have it outsourced.

Basically why I posted to see how people are cleaning them here, my cleaning method is just dish soap and water lots of towels. Had really great results on seat belts door panels. I will try that post some before and after pics. I guess this is the best that can be done.

I used to rent the "Rug Doctor", (hot water extraction). It comes with an upholstery tool.
A few years back I bought a Bissel Green machine which is also hot water extraction.
I use that now. But you could just get some of the hot water extraction cleaner and spray
it on with a spray bottle and use a wet vac to suck out the solution. I also like to rinse afterward.
I heard the soap residue will attract dirt.
I have used spray on upholstery cleaner which you can get at the grocery store. I got one that
has oxy clean in it. It works pretty well.

I machine-washed the seat-covers on my Yellow Indy without any problems. Jon, are you sure that isn't just a cardboard covering over steel rods? Or is it more of a paper/fiber compound? I don't recall... I did mine over a year ago, no problems since except that the holes are tearing out around the repair stitching I did again, the fabric is just worn thin in some spots.

My 92 GTZ's seat covers dont have any cardboard in them. The have a plastic frame and metal "clamps" to mount it on the seat. I doubted that for that matter it would be good to machine wash them, but you could handwash them... pretty sure I did couple of years ago.

I will have to double check for this cardboard but I think I am going to hand wash and rinse to be 100% safe.

Will post up some detailed pics of the covers.
