power steering noises
I am getting lots of noise from my power steering lately. The power steering pump drive pulley is wobbling back and forth a bit. Can I replace just the bearings or do I have to replace the whole pulley? I looked in my manuels and it doesnt say anything about it. All it says is to remove pulley and to install pulley with sealent compound. I would take it off to check, but I dont have any other vehicles to go get the part once I take it apart

Which car? Gotta know for pulley advice.
I'd suck out all the old fluid and replace with new. YOu'd be suprised what a difference that can make.

PS pulley is bent slightly. It is not easy to get off. You can use a puller, but it has to be the correct one or you bend the pulley. Ask me how I know that one..... The toolkit has the press to put it back on, but I wouldn't worry about it unless you just don't like how it looks. I used a 20 ton press to remove it after I found that I was bending it. Sorry 'bout that one....... I was a little less experienced then.
I don't know if the pump has any bearings it might. I would try the fluid replacement before anything. I doubt it is a bearing problem. Let us know if that works. Just some FYI there was a special small drive pulley (perhaps with a matching driven pulley) used on the race cars and perhaps some W41 cars. You might ask around about them if you are going to go to the trouble to change it.

Changing the fluid worked great. I would of never thought to change the fluid. Thanks for the info.

wow, hmm if mine makes noise I'll try the fluid trick. Mine the plastic pulley cracked and make a whining noise. I pulled the pulley off and replaced for like $15 and was good to go. I also replaced the belt tensioner at that time since it looked like it would blow apart soon.
I didn't get the pulley on perfectly straight, but good enough. you can barely tell it wobbles. Before it was wobblign a lot though!!
I used a friends GM pully puller kit. It had stuff for quad4 etc in there too. Probably got it from Harbor frieght.
