AC Port Help - 88GT

Post by oldtimer88 »

Ok, Back in Janurary I had the 'ol 88 converted over to R134. Worked great until the other day then started blowing warm... I suspect its low on charge but for the life of my can't find the high side charge port. I have looked EVERYWHERE and can't find it. I see the low side on the accumulator but where the heck is the high side? My service manual is packed away and I need help, thanks all!

You charge via the low side anyways... High side is only used for a pressure reading if you even have the high side gauge manifold.

Hmmm, I couldn't get my charge line to hook up. I'm not sure what the deal is. I'll try again tonight :(

Oh crap they put it under the battery on the old cars? I thought it was bad having to get under the car to charge the low side.

I think the R22 has a different size low side service valve.

Yep, you will need the adapters for r12 to r134a ports...

I figured out. After reading another post.... the car was already converted 10 months ago from R12 to R134 (had the dealer do). I think due to length (common problem in reading old posts) the most common thing it to put a high side fitting in the low side of system. The correct low pressure fitting is too long and won't clear in limited room. The "true" high side fitting in on top and a sensor plugs into. This wasn't changed to a R134 style fitting as the sensor wouldn't go back in so it has a R12 fitting on high side. My problem now is to find a high pressure hose/fitting to charge system. The guage set I have is too large to fit in the tight space on the accumulator under the car. Oh the joys of a 26 year old car! Hope that all makes sense!

I understand what you are explaining, but I don't understand why it was executed like that. My old 87 that retained a/c was retrofitted to r134a using the adapters. No clearance issues arised from that. Only issue that it did have was porous hoses that over time would need recharging. Hoses were brand new and you could see the "sweat" of freon when dye was induced to the system.
