automatic floor shifter

OK! So I have a 1988 base beretta with a 2.0 4 cylinder and an automatic with a floor shifter. The shifter has 2 cables coming out of it. Can't find any info in my factory manual. Has a broken plastic piece that is attached to the button on the knob. Will not go into park1 Need some help PLEASE!

Wow I have never heard of one of those letting go.

You need to depress the cable to get the shifter to move out of Park, or into Park.

You also need your foot on the brake at the same time.

How the hell did you manage this?

Not really sure. Like I said I can't find any info on this shifter. I'm not even sure what the 2 cables do. All the ones in the shop manual only show (1) cable. The bottom end slips over a metal bar that goes down to the lower cable and moves it when the button is pressed. The end where the bar slips through is what broke off.

The second cable is connected to the ignition lock so you can't shift it out of park with the key off.

Yeah no parts available on there. Anyone know of someone who has a complete shifter they want to sell? or if an aftermarket shifter would work? or possibly what would swap from another car or different year?

Hello. My name is Andy. I have a 1989 Chevy Beretta Base model 2.8L V6. Today my shifter let go while in reverse. It slides freely as if it has become disconnected. I was wondering how it was linked to the shifter cable before I get into so I know it goes back correctly. I don't know if it's a small clip or what connects the actual shifter to the linkage. Thank you for any help you can do or any light you could sheed on this.

There is a post that the cable end slides on to and is held in place by a pin. Either the cable broke or the post on the shifter broke. Also the cable could have come off the arm on the trans.

Ok thank you very much. After going back to it I can see down into the console. Sliding the shifter down to where 1st gear would be I can see the metal bracket where the cable connects too and it is connected. So I'm thinking that the actual part that you shift with ur hand is disconnected from the metal bracket at the bottom that connects to the cable. So is it connected by some sort of clip or would that require a new shifter all together.
