1990 Indy Semi-Restoration

Post by chargerrich »

Hello all,

Does anyone have a line of Beretta GTGTU/Indy parts and decals? I am about to finally get to a semi restoration of a 90 Indy and would appreciate any leads. For those interested in the story read on!

---

As a 40 something, I have fond memories of the very first car I ever purchased on my own, a Sun Fire Yellow 1990 Indy GTU Pace Car (complete with 5 speed manual, full sticker price and 16% interest!). Flash forward to 2013, when I located an automatic version of the same car in pretty decent shape. A short 700 mile drive north and 2 days later she sits in my garage. Now after a full two years of sitting, it is time to do some restoration on her. I know she may never be a true classic, but nostalgia says do it anyway.

So with that said here are the particulars of my find.

1990 Indy GTU in Yellow
139k on the clock, but full documentation on a complete new GM crate engine install at 90k
Automatic
Preferred equip package (power windows/locks, cruise, tilt, intermittent wipers, power trunk, color-keyed front and rear mats and upgraded radio LOL)
Car body is excellent with all ground effects including the elusive lower front clip
Lots of paint fading and clear coat peeling (full repaint coming)
Interior is nice
Very minor body rust
Engine hums nicely
Really REALLY need new window seal rubber, any leads appreciated!

I have included some before pictures and will post some post work for those interested.

Thanks!

Jon (3X00-Modified) has Indy decal sets that are the best quality you will find.

He also may have the nicest yellow Indy you can find!

Nice find. Be nice to it.

Cheers

I wouldn't call it the nicest Indy around. It clean yes but not perfect.

Oh and please pay attention to the wheel direction... They are labeled for RH and LH... and your photos show a RH on the RF and LF and a LH on the LR and RR... Just one of those things many notice, or at least many Beretta guys will ;)

Good looking Indy! It took me years of searching, waiting, and finally buying one at the wrong time to get a Yellow Indy that was close to me (I have a white GTU -they are technically a little different than the Indys BTW: the Indy actually replaced the GTU. I also have a Teal Indy project car, along with a couple of other Berettas). They are hard to find at all, let alone in that clean of a condition. Mine was repainted at some point in the past -it looked like it was originally a single-stage paint (glossy with no clear-coat) -can anyone else verify that the Yellow Indys originally had a clear-coat? I am thinking yours might have been clear-coated to freshen-up the paint... :unknown: So far as the decals are concerned, I am sure Jon will get you going in the right direction -but just keep in mind that the Yellow Indys had charcoal decals, whereas the much more common Teal Indys had silver -that silver set is relatively easy to find still (I say relatively...) while the correct charcoal ones are virtually non-existent. The re-pop charcoals are close enough for most of us, but it won't be exact. I am a little envious of your sunroof -of all the Berettas I have, none of them have a sunroof, and I really wanted my Yellow Indy to be so equipped. How is your dash under the cover? If you are talking about the window 'fuzzies' (or dew-strips), they are no longer made, but Jon has also made some headway on modifying some other applications -search around I think you can find info one that, it is definitely posted here. Any intentions of adding modifications during your restoration, or are you keeping it stock?

Again, nice looking car, welcome back to the pack, and to the site!

Until someone else finds a place that can print charcoal metallic letters then the "re-pop" black lettering that my car has is all you will ever see. I've spent a lot of time reproducing those decals into vector files and I have seen absolutely no interest, (this is actually the first request for a set) so I haven't pursued any further on finding another printer. I have a set of 100 original decals so if I ever had the car fully stripped and repainted I may apply those but I'm not sure.

Oh, sorry Jon, I had forgotten that the ones you had made were black -I thought you had found something closer. I am still hoping to get a couple of sets from you in the future, I just have higher priorities right now. Like you have never heard that before, sorry.
