Getting better at the aluminum.
I think being able to change your heat range on the fly with your foot is way easier... Harder to miss judge. Start off low and ramp up and start backing off if it gets too hot.

Always wanted to try a TIG but I'm so used to using a MIG I'll probably stick with that. I've never welded aluminum either but I hear it's tricky.

AC voltage and a variable pedal is best in my experience. Would need a third arm and hand to constantly adjust for penetration.

Just make sure to not damage the tip. Hate to ruin your equipment rendering it junk.3X00-Modified wrote:1988GTU wrote:Would need a third arm and hand to constantly adjust for penetration.

Thats looking pretty good there! Nice work.
Proper welding...kind of a bucket list thing. Our welder sucks though, it barely bakes steel.

Any hindrances or *shoulda got this one instead* after using the tig come about? Product quirks? Could be "better" things?

Re: Picked up two new welders...
For what I want or need to do with it, no regrets so far. Yeah there are others with tons of neat features but I simply don't do enough welding to justify the huge cost difference. Hell I think I've used my actual MIG twice since I bought that... The China TIG more than that but still not a ton... I haven't even killed one large bottle of argon yet lol. Two years leasing the bottle and no fills yet.
Re: Picked up two new welders...
Not many tigs under a grand are not Chinese made. Replacement parts hopefully exist just incase they're needed.

Re: Picked up two new welders...
This is true yes, both of my TIG's were made in China but obviously the Eastwood is a bit more tighter build quality. Regarding replacement parts, the torch is a generic one and easily found online, as well as all the consumables and the unit itself comes with a 3 yr warranty. My other Green one, well that was something that worried me and I was quite sure if anything failed inside on that I was SOL. At least this unit I can call someone if there is a problem and get answers or possibly exchange it.
Re: Picked up two new welders...
Exchanging if it breaks can be a cussing point. Tends to be in a bind and can't wait a week for the replacement. The home units that are widely known and also the expensive brands, tend to have local service and parts distribution centers to limit the down time. But dam, it come with a hefty buy in price!

Re: Picked up two new welders...
Can't complain at all about it. Been using it for quite a few projects lately and it's been great. The only complaint I have about it is the amperage scale is a bit difficult to work with anything above 110 amps. It's not an equal scale on the knob and it gets very tight at the top end of it. This is why I will almost always use the foot pedal so I can regulate it off of appearance.

Re: Picked up two new welders...
Might consider it an option, but I really want to have 1/4"+ Tig welding aluminum capability. There will be times I'd need to do 1/4", 3/8", 1/2". For the most part, 1/8" and thinner would be commonly welded.

Re: Picked up two new welders...
Open up the wallet then lol... That's a lot of amperage requirements to do that.
