I had a problem like this with my '89 2.8ltr.  At the start it would cut out at 4-5000 rpms then the point of cut off kept becoming a lower and lower RPM range untill it would shut off at about 1500 rpms.  Turned out to be the injectors on the front rail for me.  6 new injectors and $700 out of my pocket (I was 16 and knew nothing about the car, yes all the bending over without physical pain), redlined up the road and all better.

Edit:  My personal experience with any injector cleaner, shortly after adding.  Problems seemed to have appeared.  4th car and still haven't learned anything myself, I keep putting the junk in and a new problem shows up a month later.
