3400 5 speed help
I was wondering who would be able to give me some info. I have a 96 beretta and also just came across a 91 gtz for 50 bux. im wondering. what excactly i need to do to convert the 96 to five speed i already have the 3400 installed and i also plan on swapping the suspension for the gtz's fe7 setup. and no the gtz is motorless and no title so im not going to put that back on the road. Also any ideas how much of a performance enhancement this is. i know the granny tranny sux but i wanna make sure its worth it.

the gtz trany will bolt up if you swap the half of the transmission case where it bolts to the engine. You will need the subframe from a V6 manual car so it may be easier since you also need half a trany case to just get it all at the same time.

damn so im going to need to get a new subframe. i thought i might be able to get away with the gtz's. i did some searches on the wireing but everytime i see something its pretty vague wiring isn't my best. anyway what years had the most v6 manuals and im guessing this would be the better of the manuals correct? another question are the bell housings interchangeable between getrag and whatever else they used???

the getrag was in the quad4's and the V6's, just the case was different.
87-93 had V6 manuals but the 92? and previous had a horizontal bushing on the back of the control arm where as the newer ones had a vertical bushing.  Many people prefer the older style but you need to make sure to get the control arms with it. ÂÂÂ
Heres a quote I saved QUOTEBut I believe there are some minor drivability issues with surging. This would be regardless of 1994-95 or 96...or even 97-98 N bodies. You should be able to get everything to work, to work better the PCM's would need to be programmed to optimal settings for the manual trans. In my opinion 1996 is the best year to do this swap to as you can flash the PCM, and there are no plans to do this to the 94-95.

the Gtz has a unique subframe that was only used with the quad 4 engine. also the rear GTZ fe7 rear springs wont work with the base.
the best trans for you to find would be a 92 or 93 v6. scavenge all the 5spd parts.

Because the new subframe on the tranny side doesn't have the dogbone mount on it.

none of the 92-96 5-speeds do either. The only reason to change the subframe is if you are going to use the older 87-91 style mount and want to have the torque-strut. If you use the newer style mounts, then you can't put the torque strut there without modifications (front trans mount is in the way).

also for the old style control arms you can get poly bushings, which you can't get for the newer style 94+ arms. wiring involves splicing the yellow/purple wires together so they don't have to go through the auto selector switch on the tranny. I left mine in "D". also you have to splice the reverse light plug and the speedo plug in since the automatic is different.

Ok i know its been awhile but i finally am just about ready to do the swap i just want one thing cleared up. Do i need to get a subframe or not and what is the benifiet if any to getting the old style. Im not exactly sure what the toque strut is or what it does because well u just stated i dont have one anyway. i was hopeing to hit the yard monday or tuesday so any help would be GREAT!!!! One more thing do u think the gtz tranny will perform better with the 3400 then if i went to get a v6 tranny. i know the ratios where differant... the gtz is a 91. hopefully this will make as much of an improvement as i hope i hate this auto...

gtz tranz is geared lower than the v6 one. But the 4th gear is very nice because of this, you can pull like mad in 4th gear. You need to swap the bellhousing over to a v6 5speed to use the gtz trans though. They are both getrag 282 transmissions.
You'll need to do some wiring, and weld in the transmission mounts. Since it's a 96 and OBDII, you'll have check engine lights because it doesn't see the transmission anymore. You'll want to get a DHP to edit this stuff out and you can then tune your 3400 better. Check on www.60degreev6.com for member rickykline. He has a 96, 3400 and 5speed swapped in, and has tuned with DHP.
Search the other boards too for more info as it's been posted before. And on here several of us has posted what to do with the wires.

Like it has been said, you need the drivers side subframe for the dog bone mount plus it is nice to get the poly bushings so get both sides. The wiring is extremely easy as posted on 60degreev6.com. The bell housing is easy to swap too, just know what you are doing before trying to pry them apart, (must remove detent assembly). The quad will have a better ratio for your 3400. I just finished my swap and the link is posted in this section and originally on bstuff.com. pm me for any questions.
