Starting problem

Post by KillerofRice »

I have 90 GTZ quad 4 5-speed. About a week ago I got my starter rebuilt. What fun the was to due, but anyway now if my car sits for about 7 hours it won't attempt to start. Every once in a while it will fire right up with no problem at all. But to get it started I pump the clutch like crazy and it starts after a little pumping. Once its started it fires right up every time after that. But once it sits I'm back to where I was. I don't think its my clutch just replaced it back in September but could I have air in the system. I can't understand how its the switch at the clutch pedal but could that be the culprit. I'm baffled for now. Its annoying and I want to get rid of the problem.

Yea it could be messing with the switch.  I would def try to bleed the air from the lines.  Check for proper fluid level.  Also check for leaks.  You could have a leak that is putting air into the pressure side making you have air bubbles.
Good luck!!

The clutch shouldn't affect the starting of the engine.  You're right that the clutch safety switch by the pedal could be a problem.  The switch itself could be bad, the wiring could be broken, or the floormat could be keeping you from depressing the pedal all the way  When you attempt to start the car, does the starter solenoid click every time?  Does the engine crank and just not run?  Because the problem appeared after the starter was rebuilt, that makes me suspicious of the starter or something directly connected to it.

The engine or starter don't even attempt to try. I don't hear the starter solenoid click. I would think if the solenoid would be going funky it would due it all the time just not after sitting for so many hours. I'll check the floor mat and look around the switch today. The fluid level is fine and I don't have any leaks and having the external slave cylinder tranny makes it almost impossible to bleed the system. So I'll see what it does when I go to school tonight. Maybe it will fix itself

Nothing with the clutch hydraulics would prevent the engine from turning over.  If anything it would make the car move forward when turning over because the clutch wasnt fully disengaged.

The clutch safety switch sounds like your issue.  Take Jeff's advice and figure out if the clutch pedal is fully depressing the switch.  If it is, replace the switch with a JY unit (cheapest alternative, and they RARELY go bad).
