Camshaft broke in half
I'm just throwing this out there. My neighbor just had a camshaft break in half on his 95 Grand Prix 3.1L. I don't know how a cam would be put under that much stress to break in half. I would have thought the timing chain would have snapped before the cam. My neighbor was a mechanic and he's never saw anything like this before. I just wondering if anyone knows what caused it possibly or if no one has never seen this before either.

I've seen the lobes snapped off before and cracks in cams, but I don't recall seeing one broken completely through.

3100? Sure, it happens. No oil, internal coolant leak, high miles.

Yeah, I've heard of it happening too... usually a result of the lower intake manifold gasket failing.

It's a typical failure on the 3100. Has to do with how the cam is made. The new (3500) camshafts are made better.
