fuel filter

Could some one please tell me,If you take the fuel filter off and you turn the key on to make the fuel pump run. Shouldnt the fuel pump keep pumping,not shut off because there is no fuel filter on it only a dish to catch the fuel being pumped?  I mean shouldnt it just keep pumping because there is nothing to stop it??

it will only run for a few seconds without the engine running.  If you want it to run longer (like to drain the tank) you can supply power to the little red wire that's hiding out in the drivers side corner of the engine bay near the firewall.
