Weird Tranny thing

Post by 6r8ph1X »

Ok guys, on my 96 base 3.1L of which I love so very very much, I get a weird phenomenon happening. On the occasion that I stomp on the gas in Over Drive, my retta upshifts and then just sits there and revs, kinda like it went to neutral on accident. Any Ideas what this is? Another weird thing happened when I had started it, went to pull out and around like 15 to 25 mph, it shifted to second, then started to stutter.  I stopped, shifted to park and imeadiately pluged in my OBD2 reader and all it gave me is my usual P0401 for my stipid egr flow insufficient, nothing new. I turned it off, started it again, and off I went as normal. WEIRD!  Any ways, also I noticed when I'm on the highway, it can't decide which gear to stay in, like it goes from I'm guessing 3rd to 4th and then back to 3rd and then  back to 4th. Doesn't bother me but I was just curious. Any Ideas? please say my tranny isn't gona go bad. I don't have that money! Hopefully I just need to clean it out or somethin. But if it sounds like it may, what tranny upgrades could I get while I'm at it? also, could someone post a pic of where the break booster line is so I can put in some seafoam? Thanks guys

I would probably check the TPS and the vacuum line to the modulator on the tranny.

I'm definately no tranny expert though.

TPS is on the throttle body and the vacuum modulator is down under the battery on the front of the tranny if I remember correctly.

Try a search on how to check the TPS.

Your converter may be going out. Don't know for sure. But you can try a stall test. On the street in a safe place, put your brake pedal down and the gas at the same time. If the rpm goes up but the car doesn't try to move it is the converter. At least that's how you test a rwd. The 4th gear is not a gear so to speak, it is the converter locking up. Hope this helps other than that I don't know.

Yes, 4th gear is really 4th gear.  There is also a converter lockup.  The '94-'96 3100s were the only Berettas to get the 4T60-E transmission.

Woah cool guys thanks for helpin me,
Ok The tranny shifts at about these points...
1st=0mph
2nd=35ish (I forget exactly)
3rd=exactly at 50
4th=around 65-70

now, my prob has kinda quieted down a bit actually. It hasn't done the weird neutral thingy since, well, I guess since I posted this topic. Any other info would be nice though. Also, to Money pit, I've done this in the past actually before. Yes my retta does try to leap foreward ( and sometimes succeeds cause I need new brake pads)    ok. Thanks again guys!

Sorry for the wrong info on the 4th gear. Must have been thinking of the old days.
