Rusted Frame

My 92 Z26 frame is rusted through below the doors. Should i just clean them up and paint them. Only the bottom is rusted through and the floor pans are in good shape. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like your rockers are rotted. Mine has the exact same problem but with only the passenger side. How are your door sills? Chances are that there is a hole there too, might as well cut out the affected metal while you're at it.

You SHOULD get it replaced ASAP but i'd say do it when you have the "extra" money. It's not THAT important but it is a structural part of the body. If you get in a crash your car won't be as solid meaning it will crumple more than if you would've had solid rockers. But for now, if you don't have the money, prime it, paint it and leave it. Just make sure to keep an eye on it. Rust is a ***** on these cars.

Thanks for the info, Both door sills have holes in them which I am going to put new sheetmetal in and seal up. The outer body is in fantastic shape other than a couple of surface rust spots. We definately want to get this car looking good as there seems to be so few left around here. Thanks again for your help.

Ah, I figured the door sills have holes in them. My guess is that dirt and water caused the paint to wear away here, then the dirt and water built up in the rocker rotting it out.

Using cause and effect, if you just replace the metal there it will do it again sooner or later. Solution? Drill a hole or two as "drain holes" but if you JUST do that then guess what will happen? The door sills will be fine but dirt and water might find a way to still build up in the rocker despite you still having holes in the rockers. You need to direct the dirt and water out the bottom, so using a pipe of some sort may work. Like... weld the pipe to the drain hole in the door, then weld it to the rocker.... I always sucked at explaining things. Here's a quick drawing in paint:

Of course, the drain "pipe" won't be exactly where it is in the drawing. Instead put it where the rust holes are. This will basically make sure that you never have a problem to water buildup or paint problems due to debris.

Oh, and the pipe WILL have to be treated with some kind of paint! I'd choose bed liner, undercoating, or something of the sort. It's going to be seeing a LOT of water and dirt. Enamel or Lacquer paint just won't hold up here. Urethane MIGHT but i'd choose a paint that is meant to take abuse (like the ones listed above or even POR-15).
