Fighting the Quad

Post by KillerofRice »

I went to leave my brother's apartment tonight and I started the car. It fired up but was revving around 2750 rpms. So I kicked the gas pedal just revved up and came back to 2750 so I reached down and pulled on it. So I shut it off and figured why not give her another try, and turned out to do the same thing big surprise. So I went walked back to brother's and got a light and jumper wire b/c I noticed on the second start up the engine light was on. So I go to check the codes and it won't blink anything. I had something to blink at it but I calmed myself. Also my radiator fan runs as soon as the key hit the on position. So I'm figuring it's either the IAC valve or a TPS. Are there any other possibilities? I checked the throttle body and it's not stuck. Its a 90 GTZ q4 5 speed.

Well I replaced the IAC and TPS and no change. I guess its a vacuum leak at the intake or a the inevitable head gasket finally caught me. So anybody got some helpful hints on my quest. Right now I'm frustrated and drinking a beer. So I'll drive it home and attack tomorrow.

Well on the drive home idling at 2500 I noticed I have a couple more problems. I have no speedo, trip meter, or odometer. The tach works flawless along with the other gauges. Could the computer have taken a dump? I love talking to myself on this subject. I'm calling the mechanic in the morning to see what he says and to see if he can possibly get the computer to read out. I'll keep myself up to date.

Did you ever find out what it was? My PCM failed once and I lost many things(speedo, heater & AC controls, and others). I was stuck in the limp home mode. I had to check the Chilton's Manual to see how all the systems were related. If that's not it tell me and I'll try to help as best I can.

Well I'm waiting on a new ecm, should be here thursday. I'm pulling it into the garage tomorrow to start tearing stuff apart and start to fill my rear motor mount and tranny mount. So the fun shall begin very shortly. The computer fuse was fine so the mechanic said it's probably the ecm.

Sorry I've been on vacation.

Yes I'd guess ECM.  Good luck!

Well I got the ecm out and pulled the prom out. The new ecm should be here tomorrow and I'll put it in and see what she does. I miss my z28 but I wouldn't take it over the retta. It was a better beater b/c it was cheap to fix. I hoping to get her back on the road so I can go up and watch some of the little league world series in Williamsport.

That's good to hear! I miss working on rwd V8's also. I got my 90GT in 96 and just can't seem to give up on it (in the shop now for control arm bushings).

Well, we are getting off topic and they may shut us down. It's been good talking to and helping a fellow Z28 and 90 Beretta owner. I hate to cut it off like this, PM me sometime. I'll be posting too.
