Coolant leak
Coolant leak
I have a '96 with a 3100. I was leaking coolant the other day and there was a puddle right underneath the water pump, so I replaced that. Long story short, its still leaking.
So, I traced the leak from the torque strut on the passenger's side up to the belt tensioner. That is, at the top of the back of the timing cover. That is the last place that I see it.
My only idea was that it was leaking from the back head gasket.
I just wanted to check this time and make sure what it is before I tear into it, so that is why I am checking here.
Any other ideas? Thanks.

Ok, I think I've figured it out.

I am going to suggest it being that the LIM is leaking. Get the updated metal gaskets and be free from the lim leaking ever again.

I just changed my front cover gasket, I would get some dye & test it. It will show you where it is leaking from
PS: that is exactly where mine was leaking

Be sure to check for warpage on the timing cover IF that is the problem. There was a member here that had a TC that was leaking due to that issue. Just put a straight edge to it and to the engine side.

A co-worker of mine had a similar problem on the other side of the engine on his 3100 and it was the lower intake gasket. You might want to clean it off real good at a car wash and then it might make it easier to find the traces of coolant.

got the same thing with my 96 3.1. mechanic said the same- the timing cover which is connected to that aluminum cover that the water pump connects to. they told me that the aluminum pits too which causes the gasket not to seal. they recommended and I used the bars heavy duty stop leak. so far so good. when using the stop leak, it's a pain. have to drain down the rad, and pull the radiator hose off in order to get the pellets in. I'll never buy a gm again...
