Help me figure this coolant leak out. (pics)

Post by BatmobileSS »

So about 3 years ago I replaced the intake manifold gaskets and recently I've been seeing coolant on the ground. It's gotten pretty bad so I ripped into it today. With 170K miles on the car everything looks pretty crappy and it's hard to determine where this coolant is coming from.

In the pics you'll notice on the right hand side of the block there is a puddle of coolant, this is where it was collecting and leaking down the transmission.
Question is, IM gasket again or head gasket?

I'm going to say Lower intake failed again.

At least from the look of that pic.

Yes its the LIM gasket. Get the metal felpro or the metal dorman ones and you won't have to ever replace it again.

You can see how the coolant jacket there was leaking outside of the motor.

Damn I like that camaro. Nice hood and all. It all goes together well! Mean looking!

Well that's what I assumed it was, just wanted a second opinions before I start putting it all back together.

Thanks for the compliments on my SS. Once the cam and supporting mods go in and get some tuning done I should be at 410-420WHP and seeing trap speeds around 120mph

New problem, everything is back together and no leaks are present. Now I'm getting white smoke out of the exhaust. I've let it get up to operating temperature a few times and it still smokes.

I changed the oil and ran a new quart through it to flush out anything else that may be in there also.

Suggestions?

Run it for about 50 miles, drop the oil/filter again. I say do this just to insure the motor gets good and flushed with fresh oil. Before dropping your oil check it for milky residue. Also check to see if your oil level went up and your coolant level down. If it continues to smoke with the new oil change you've got one of three things.
In order from most likely to least likely/common. GL.
1.) Bad head gasket
2.) Bad head
3.) Cracked block

Well I did a compression test and everything was OK there so I took it out and ran the piss out of it...good as new

Sounds like you just had some excess coolant to get rid of. Glad to hear it worked out. Keep a close eye on it for a few hundred miles though.

Yea thats exactly what's going on with my Corsica. It's not bad to the point that I see any leaks on the ground but it does puddle in that area. I'm going to be changing the LIMG with the Felpro metal ones and I'm making sure I'm going to use some RTV on the end gaskets to make sure NOTHING is going to leak again.

Having to re-do stuff you just did FTMFL!!

use rtv around the coolant paths of the gasket when you throw it back together. And make sure to torque it to specs while using the correct pattern.
