What is it doing? More info would help. Same year of trans as your car? Does the fluid smell strange? Any metal flakes in the fluid?

Going from first to second gear I have to quickly let go of the gas like in a manual when shifting gears. Actually it does smell after it warms up.

Ok, I have been wrong many times, but it sounds like the modulator on the trans. That's a vac set up, so check the line for breaks or cracks. Pull the dipstick and check the color of the fluid, smell(burnt?) and feel for metal. Does the RPM go up and down while driving at a steady speed?

Very possible and done many times. Check out www.Quad4Forums.com for a write up on it in the Tech Writeups section. GL.

Find this plug:

It's located on the trans, front of car driver side area of engine bay.  Unplug it and go for a test drive and report back with results.
Look under the area of the air filter stuff.

I'm guessing it's fixed. It's funny how we so rarely hear back from people once we've helped to fix their problem.....
