Two questions

Post by SuzukiGhostRider »

I want to bounce it off you guys.
1.) The MAF Sensor is not where it belongs. It's been moved directly in front of the condensor. It's still plugged up, but with it being behind the grill and in front of the condensor and FAN, it's gettting hot air blown though it when the fan blows and cold air above 70mph (because as you probably know with the A/C on the fan will shut down at 70mph and above unless hard wired). I should note I did NOT do this. It was already done.
2.) The IAT Sensor is non existent. As in not there, plug dangling empty. PCV and IAT slots on my WAI are blocked off with rubber grommets.

I would like to know what effects these two things together might have on my system in your opinions. I have a few of my own and want to verify what I think. I think I'm being caused a few issues by these two things. Obviously efficient AF delivery and EGR operation, but possibly my ignition timing as well.
Post what you think. I need the mechanics on this one please.

the IAT is in the MAF on an '88.  And most likely your computer chip was updated to disregard the MAF aside from the IAT reading.

Really? Just wondering because I have the unused plug for the IAT coming off of the harness right by my air tube and according to the manual it has one. They actually call it the MAT for '88. And AZ lists it.
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP22....ail.htm

I don't think the ECM was programmed to ignore the MAF though because it's still plugged up. They added wire to be able to plug it in. Wouldn't it be unplugged if ignored? Not trying to be argumentative here Cliff. I do appreciate the help. Just trying to figure out what's up for sure.

I'm wondering what the effects of these two things (one missing, one improperly placed) would be in your opinon?
BTW, remember my engine IS a '90 3.1L but the harnesses should be the same ,yeah? So they shouldn't have had to swap them, right?

It should be upgraded, to see if it is:
http://www.berettaspeed.com/information ... .php?id=16

Not having the IAT plugged in will make the car think it is reading a negative temp which will make it run rich and give driveability issues.

On any MAF equipped MPFI car I ever own that had a faulty MAF sensor never threw a code.  Although it did idle rough, in the end they were all upgraded to speed density.

Something has to be done to the chip cause with no IAT sensor connected(and no resistor between the prongs) it will throw a code for the IAT. Contact Gordo and see what he did.

He probably attempted to do the upgrade, but didnt finish by installing the correct computer.  So the computer is just running off old settings still with no MAF.

I'm going to take a pic of the plug just sitting there. Because Cliff said no IAT on my year, that Berettaspeed article said to splice the new one into the MAF wiring. I'm sure it's the IAT plug..... Will post the pic. I thought so too John on the code. I have a scanner and have tested several times. No codes. I pulled various sensor plugs here and there one at a time and started the car. Every one kicked the "Check Engine" light. Didn't do the MAF though. Strange....
